Descriptions du produit

From Publishers Weekly

A usual problem with sequels?that they don't measure up to the original?applies to this follow-up to Shadow of a Dark Queen, which also suffers from unexpectedly stodgy prose and a paucity of action. Focusing on Rupert Avery's rise to power and influence in the mercantile class of the City of Krondor, the narrative follows "Roo" as he forms a business alliance with a merchant, Helmut Grindle, whose daughter, Karli, he marries for a multitude of reasons, none of which is love. Roo begins an affair of sorts with the nasty and calculating Sylvia Easterbrook but also manages to have two children with Karli. Meanwhile, his friend and compatriot Erik von Darkmoor travels back down to the land of Novindus to battle the Pantathians (the serpents referred to in the subtitle). Throughout, the pacing is slow and the characters less than persuasive. While Feist sows enough interesting seeds here to redeem this series in its next (and final) installment, this volume is up to neither snuff nor par.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Fascinating, Aoû 10 2004
Par Un client
In some ways I love this novel more than Shadows of a dark queen, simply because of all the multiple facets that Feist writes about and noted Knowledgably about. I love the political power plays, the intrigue and just the whole feel of the characters two things I could have wished for in this particular novel, 1) A little more action with Duke James (Nothing wrong with whats there I just wanted more!) 2) Kill off Sylvia at the beginning... I hated that character with a passion not the writing of her, just her character all around and I think that's the way it's meant to be although as you get more indepth you begin to realize that it's not quite all her fault.
Nope it's not your typical fantasy of sci-fi fare and that's what makes it so wonderful. Most of the time you don't see what happens behind the scenes of the war and to see a book like this is wonderful.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Didn't have problem with this book, Mars 6 2004
That is when it finally got off its rocker and decided which direction it was going in(it takes a signifigant amount of time). I like Roo less than I like Erik so I found this book a lttle hard to get into at first. Than about halfway through the book I started to realize that the charecter of Rubert Avery was starting to grow on so I ended up not minding all that much. This is all coupled with the fact that there was some very cool "Power behind the throne" stuff, an approach in fiction that I have always been partical to.

Overall-Thew most redeming quality of this book for me was that if left off at exactly the point where the book should have ended. You know, when you read a book and you feel that the book should ended ten chapters ago? There is none of that feeling here, I can't wait for my chance to read book 3.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Rise of a Merchant Prince, Déc 30 2003

The sequal doesn't measure up to the Original? Are you dense or just of low intelligence?
In the first book, Shadow of a Dark Queen, we met the characters, and set the scenario, then we watched them grow up and become men. In Rise of a Merchant Prince, yes we do focus on Roo, more than Eric or Calis, but it not only sets the scene for Rage of a Demon King, It continues to show Both Eric and Roo evolving into more complex characters, and still discovering who they are in the world.
Oh and if you didn't like the the characters evolving and becoming more like real humans than fictional non entities, your gunna hate the next one...
HURRAH for Feist.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Just the middle book of the series
Though the book was not horrible, I would say I felt it was a forced reading on my part. It did develop Roo's character more, but quite frankly the reason I read fantasy... Read more

4.0étoiles sur 5 It was okay...Minor exlusions but still good.
It was okay, but it really didn't have enough action. That and Roo is one of my least favorite characters. It *did* give Calis something like a personality, though. Read more

4.0étoiles sur 5 A very very DIFFERENT story from Feist.
