It's fun for a while, Sep 28 2009
I just finished this book, my fourth from James Rollins. The others I've read were Amazonia, Maps of Bones and The Judas Strain.
The first 2-3 pages set a good tone for the book, but then, it went on for another 60-70 pages of character introduction with little advancement in the main story. I might have given up if this was my first read from James Rollins, but having read the others, I hung on and he came through. The story then moved along at a good pace with mystery, suspense and danger just lurking around the corner. Towards the end though, it got a little silly (I am willing to buy the lead character's special ability, just the writing was a bit...silly), and at the very end, it just seem like he ran out of paper and had to wrap up in a hurry, also there were issues that I think were not properly addressed.
All in all, it kept me hooked for quite a while and I enjoyed it. The rating I gave this book is relative to the others from him that I have read, I considered Amazonia a 4 and the other two a 4/5.
As others pointed out, this was the author's first book, and it's really not bad for a first effort.

A solid read, Aoû 10 2009
This was my first James Rollins book and for the authors first novel, I thought it was a strong effort. The concept of the book is classic adventure novel. An underground network of tunnels is discover under Antarctica and a team of scientists must go down and explore, and naturally, some pretty amazing and nasty stuff awaits them. This is one of the novels strongest aspects. The setting of being underground is very interesting and really adds to the sense of tension and danger. The adventure is what keeps these types of novels going, and this adventure does not disappoint. The characters are faced with many types of danger and seeing how they overcome these obstacles always remains interesting.
Much like Micheal Crichton, Rollins sprinkles science into his stories to help explain his plots. In general he does a good job of this and I found these little bits of info quite interesting. In fact, I wish he had gone deeper and given more info. For example, some of the creatures in the novel have been around for almost 6 million years (man kind has only been around for 160'000 years) but he never explains what they did and where they were before man kind came around and why they haven't changed in hundreds of thousands of years(and why we never discovered any fossils). Another example is how Rollins never explained the whole ESP thing (more on that later).
The characters are what you'd expect from this type of novel. They are plausible if somewhat cliché'd. There is enough character development to keep you interested and the characters generally seem like they could be real people. One complaint is that the evil characters are almost too evil. They go about killing many people for little or no reason. Also, the character of Jason (the team leaders kid) was unnecessary and annoying. He seemed only to exist to add tension because he might be killed (I had my fingers crossed that he would be).
The story overall is very solid. The team is met with ever increasing odds as they discover the mystery of the caves. It keeps you interested in what will happen next for the majority of the book. However, it starts to fall apart a bit near the end. Once they discover an entire society down in the caves and they start communicating through ESP, it got a little far fetched to me. Also, the ending is very inconclusive. The remaining good guys escape and BAM! It's over. There is a short epilogue but it really doesn't say what happens to the creatures in the cave and how the world reacts to the discovery.
Overall this is a very solid book. Despite my nitpicks with it, the book kept me reading avidly to the very last page. If your looking for a solid adventure book, you won't be dissapointed.

What an incredible book, Oct. 30 2007
Once you start reading it, you won't be able to set it down. I even got yelled at by my boss for reading the book on company time. I've read it 4 times and each time is like the first time. There is alot of information to process so get ready be blown away. It's awsome. Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it.
