From Amazon.com

Edward York is an illegal clone, genetically engineered for perfection--but something went wrong. His twin sister, Ambassador Samantha York, is a gorgeous genius, but the physically perfect Edward is condemned by his faulty brain to service in the human Navy's Outward Fleet Explorer Corps, a collection of misfits who call themselves the Expendables, and with good reason. After Edward fails to save his sister's life on the war-torn planet Troyen, he is sent away on a Navy starship in which all other crew and passengers die in the same instant, leaving Edward alone--and trapped with unknown, destructive nanotechnology. If that isn't trouble enough, his fate is mysteriously tied to that of Troyen's native race, the Mandasar, in a complex interstellar web of conspiracy and treachery. And his only allies may be five young Mandasar; a human-alien symbiont with motives of her own; and the most infamous Expendable in the Corps, the hated Admiral Festina Ramos.

In addition to Hunted, James Alan Gardner has written two previous novels featuring Festina Ramos, Expendable and Vigilant; his novel Commitment Hour is set in the same universe. --Cynthia Ward

From Publishers Weekly

The latest title in Gardner's loosely linked League of Peoples series (Expendable; Vigilant) brings back a few familiar characters but focuses on Edward York, the son of Admiral Alexander York. Edward's secret is that he and his sister were genetically engineered before birth to be perfect. Unfortunately, something went awry, and Edward is a bit slow intellectually, so his father secures him a position in the Explorer Corps, the branch responsible for contacting new life forms. The catch is that Explorers (or Expendables) often die in the process. Despite his handicap, Edward manages to figure things out in his own way, as he becomes enmeshed in a civil war on Troyen, a planet with a long and complicated political and social history. Gardner's plot is rewardingly complex as well, bringing in elements and characters from his previous books, but his wry dialogue and engaging characters propel the narrative. Edward turns out to have some surprising abilities, which enable him to charm both humans and the large, lobster-like natives of Troyen and, when he learns the truth about those he's cared for, to deal with the consequences. 5.0étoiles sur 5 Best Sci-Fi Everyone *Hasn't* Read, Avril 15 2004
With science-fiction (or possibly space opera) books as a speciality, this author is not terribly well-known but should be. The Expendables series (of which Hunted is midway in the series) is absolutely joyful to read, with a delicious sense of humor embedded in every chapter.

The main character (Edward) is not your typical hero, and the insect-like aliens don't seem unlikely. I certainly enjoyed Edward's open minded attitude and even affection towards his adopted race, even though he doesn't feel he is "smart" enough to look after them.

This was a delightful surprise to find and read. You do not have to worry about Garner slapping you with too much technology and not enough characterization and plot.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A Terrific Story with many twists, Janv. 11 2001

The Hunted is a terrific book that mixes great science fiction with mysteries that keep you guessing, and some nice touches of humor.

For those of you who are new to James Alan Gardner, I would recommend first reading one of his other books, "Expendable" which sets up some of the characters and space organizations that are in Hunted.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A royal sci fi thriller, Déc 12 2002
Par "blissengine" (Norfolk, VA USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Twenty years ago, Explorer Edward York and his diplomat sister were stationed on the Mandasar homeworld of Troyen, trying to stop a civil war, but when his sister and the Mandasar queen are murderered, war does break out and Edward barely escapes with his life. Since then, Edward has been kept by the Fleet on an observation post orbiting Troyen. When a ship finally picks Edward up for the trip home, the entire crew are executed for crimes by the fabled League of Peoples, who govern the whole of outer space. Edward finds himself at the heart of a growing conspiracy which threatens his own life as well as the whole of the Mandasar people, and he feels he's in way over his head. Luckily Explorer Festina Ramos arrives, but there are also secrets that Edward is keeping, so maybe getting help to solve this mystery wasn't such a great idea after all. James Alan Gardner's fourth book "Hunted" is one of the best in the series. With compelling characters (including the legendary Ramos) and an engrossing mystery plot, this science fiction story zips through every twist and turn, refusing to let the reader go until the end. And what an end it is!
