From Publishers Weekly

After reading this superb post-Regency-era romance, the fifth in Quinn's Bridgerton siblings series, it's easy to see why the author's previous book, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, landed on RWA's Top 10 Favorite Books of 2002 list. Quinn is a consummate storyteller. Her prose is spry and assured, and she excels at creating indelible characters like chatty Eloise Bridgerton and Sir Phillip Crane, the protagonists of this unconventional effort. The novel opens as Eloise, a 28-year-old "spinster," flees London to visit her secret pen pal, Phillip, a troubled botanist and widower. The two plan to see if they are compatible, but Eloise's hopes plummet when she discovers that Phillip is not the romantic charmer of her dreams, but a grumpy father of twins. She agrees to remain for a fortnight, however, and as she interacts with him and his unruly children, she learns that he has a good heart, even if he is an emotionally distant father. Weighty issues such as abuse and discipline threaten to overshadow their relationship at times, but Eloise's sunny disposition brightens the novel, as does the arrival of her four brothers. Quinn's characters possess endearing quirks and flaws, and their easy banter is loaded with wit and warmth. Indeed, readers will likely find themselves rereading certain passages-if not the entire book-in order to prolong their connection to this charismatic clan.

Product Description

Sir Phillip knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he'd proposed, figuring that she'd be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except . . . she wasn't. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her . . . and more.

Did he think she was mad? Eloise Bridgerton couldn't marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking . . . and wondering . . . and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except . . . he wasn't. Her perfect husband wouldn't be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled . . . and when he kissed her . . . the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn't help but wonder . . . could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

2.0étoiles sur 5 Not a very charming hero!, Juil 18 2004
I must say the hero somewhat repulsed me. The references to spanking and him sexually relieving himself I could well do without. He had too many issues to ever be a good hero. I finished the book rather fast and it was not boring. I just didn't find it romantic. And after all, this is supposed to be a romance book and romance is not suppose to make the reader nauseous. Two thumbs down!

5.0étoiles sur 5 My favorite JQ book, Juil 11 2004

(REAL NAME)
Yep. I Love 'To Sir Phillip, with Love'. I guess it's one of those you either love it or loathe it kind of books, but I can't quite grasp why someone wouldn't love it too.

The first thing that attracted me was the hero himself. Sir Phillip. He is a different sort of hero than you usually see in a romance novel. He's not that sure of himself, he's failing as a father and he has a lot of pain from the past buried inside himself. But he tries, and he cares, and he is honorable to a fault. He's a good man, with all the failings and blessings that come with it. And you hardly ever see that now days. Usually it's all about the rogue who has bedded a thousand women and now he'll promise to be faithful to one woman the rest of his life. *ahem* Right.

I guess TSPWL came along at just the right time for me. I was caught up in the story, I loved the hero, Eloise herself was a different kind of heroine and she was utterly perfect for Phillip. It was fun catching up with the brothers and finding out how they were doing. It made me cry and it made me laugh and I was truly grateful for the happy ending.

As for it not being like some of her other books, well...Julia Quinn never writes the same book twice and I'm truly grateful for that.

3.0étoiles sur 5 I really had problems with this book..., Jui 21 2004
Par Un client
I absolutely ADORE Julia Quinn. She is an amazing writer and as long as she writes, I will keep buying. That being said, I hope she never writes anything like this book again. While there are many humorous and interestng scenes, the plot as a whole seemed to fall flat. Also, throughout the book, I had the overwhelming urge to slap sir Philip.
He spanks his children and, from what the book implied, often. Now, while a lot of people have no problems with that, I do. It seems like romances are always the first to write about and condone human cruelty. Pick up any old romance and you will find a heroine who is raped, whipped, spanked, or hit by her "love". Now a days, thank god, this behavior is not considered okay and so is not written about anymore, although books like "Whitney, My Love" and "The Blck Lyon" are still considered utterly romantic by some people.
Child abuse seems to be the newest thing everyone is trying to say is acceptable. A woman is a human being, her husband has no right to "discipline" her or raise a hand against her. So, if it is not okay to hit or spank a grown woman, why is it okay to do it to a defenseless child?
Yes, children misbehave, but, spankings teach a child nothing except humiliation and fear. A child can be taught through groundings, being sent to bed without dessert, even, as a last resort, being yelled at. If your spouse got mad at you for something and hit you, it would enrage you and build hatred in you. But, chances are that, in the same situation, you would do it again, cause you havn't LEARNED anything. Please, someone tell the romance writers to stop writing about spanking children; the abuse of women was allowed and promoted by romances for years because they were considered inferior, lets not let the same tragedies happen to our children today.
If we want to tech our children, we can do it in non-violent ways.
