This third book in Harrison's Storyteller trilogy completes the tale begun in her two previous works,
Song of the River (1997) and
Cry of the Wind (1998). This installment, which, like the others, is set in prehistoric Alaska, features two storytellers: Yikaas, a young, handsome, and fiery-tempered member of the River People tribe; and Qumalix, a beautiful, clever, and high-spirited member of the Sea Hunters tribe. These two quick-witted characters spend their evenings sparring verbally and weaving tales of their historic ancestors for their gathered tribespeople. Their nightly contest to tell the most enchanting tale (and the hint of attraction between them) brings to life legends of the tribes' heroic ancestors, much to the delight of the assembled listeners, while also weaving a dramatic plot for readers to follow.
