Debt-ridden Avery Fleming is determined to find a wealthy husband for his beautiful daughter, Erienne, so he can pay off his mountain of debts. Erienne, however, has refused every one of the old men her father has picked for her consideration. When she meets dashing American merchant Christopher Seton, she cannot deny her attraction to him, despite the fact that he wounded her brother, Farrell, in a duel, crippling him for life. However, when Seton asks for Erienne's hand in marriage, both she and her father refuse him. Instead, Erienne's father auctions her off to the highest bidder--the mysterious Lord Saxton, a man whose horrifying scars are hidden by a mask and cloak. Erienne comes to know her husband as a kind and gentle man, but when Christopher Seton returns to town, she cannot fight her attraction to him. She finds herself torn between her duty to the man she has wed and the call of her heart.

Product Description

The fairest flower in Mawbry is Erienne Fleming, the enchanting, raven-haired daughter of the village mayor. Charming, spirited and exquisitely lovely, she is beset on all sides by suitors, any one of whom would pay a king's fortune for a place in her heart. But Erienne has eyes for only one: the dashing and witty young Yankee, Christopher Seton.

But marriage for love is not to be, for her irresponsible and unscrupulous father, crippled by gambling debts, is intent on auctioning off his beautiful daughter to the highest bidder. And in the end, Erienne is devastated to find it is the strange and secretive Lord Saxton who has purchased her—a mysterious, tragic figure who wears a mask and a cloak at all times to hide disfiguring scars gained in a terrible fire some years back.

But in the passing days, Saxton's true nature is revealed to her. A gentle and adoring soul, he treats his new bride with warmth and abiding tenderness, yet appears to her only by daylight. She, in turn, vows to be a good and loyal wife to him. And then Christopher Seton reenters Erienne's world Conflicted by emotions she cannot suppress, Erienne valiantly attempts to remain honorable to her elusive, enigmatic husband but feels herself irresistibly drawn to Seton's passion, his fire, and his secrets. Entangled in intrigues she doesn't yet understand, Erienne Fleming will soon have to make a devastating choice: between love and honor . . . between her duty and her heart. --Ce texte provient de la Mass Market Paperback édition.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Reasonably entertaining (but predictable) Beauty and the Beast Plot, Fév 7 2008
Par Misfit (Seattle, WA USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Erienne Fleming's father, the hard drinking and gambling mayor of their northern England town needs to sell her in marriage to the highest bidder to pay off his gambling debts. Handsome Yankee Christopher Seton wants Erienne, but since Christian is the one he owes the greatest debt to, Christian is banned from bidding for her hand. Instead, Erienne's hand is purchased by the mysterious Lord of Saxton who was horribly injured and scarred for life in a fire. Erienne is as first horrified by her new husband's appearance and fights her growing attraction to Christopher at the same time and thus begins KEW's take on the Beauty and the Beast.

Unfortunately, as much fun as KEW's romances can be to read, this book has some major flaws. The big twist in the plot is pretty easy to figure out -- as other reviewers have noted. In fact, almost everything in the book is pretty easy to figure out. The bad guys were inept and almost cartoonish in their bad deeds. Erienne is supposed to be intelligent and well educated, but her initial reactions to her disfigured husband just don't ring true, Stuart was nothing but kindness itself and a very gentle and loving husband. She was always running off and getting herself into a pickle so that Christopher could rescue her, and I have to agree with the other reviewers in that it got to be just a tad bit over the top that every man in the book was dying to jump her bones.

All in all, not the worst in the historical romance genre, but far from the best either and certainly not one of KEW's better efforts (which would be Ashes in the Wind), but well suited for a rainy Sunday afternoon easy on the brain type of fluff. I'm sorely torn between a two and three star rating, so I'm calling it at 2.5 stars rounded it up to three.

2.0étoiles sur 5 "blah blah blah blah BLAH", Sep 3 2006
Par Phart Fayce "FF" (Phartz, Indiana) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Rose in Winter (Hardcover)
THE author used 567 pages to tell a story that could have been charmingly written in 300. The heroine is nails-on-the-chalkboard annoying for the first half of the book, even her name is annoying. You can basically skip pages 150 to 350, unless you are having trouble sleeping, the redundancy is more trite than counting sheep! The author goes on and on and ON about the weather and birds and croaking frogs, it is just too much! The matrix of the story itself was good but her blathering knows no end. She even uses about four sentences to describe an old man's belch and 'roiling bowel movements'. Reading only the first sentence of each paragraph is a good strategy. You get the gist, without her endless babble. Overall, I think I'm being generous with 3 stars, considering the diarrhea of the pen this author embraces in her writing style. It was a good plot, decent story, why drag it out with all the nonsense? I think I"m going to change my rating to a two star.

5.0étoiles sur 5 An excellant Romance, Mars 26 2004
Par Un client
I am by no means a new reader of Woodiwiss, but to date this is the best of her books. The characters are strong willed and yet there is no lasting hatred between them. Christophers' character is well written and very likable without being foppish. The character of Erienne is soft and yielding with a flashing grace and tempermant. I enjoyed the exchanges of both temper and passion between the two and the interactions with the other charaters. While the twist at the end was forseeable, the reader is sure to enjoy the twists and turns on the journey to discovering who is Eriennes true love, her sweet yet scarred husband, or the man with face of an angel and the heart of a rogue.
