From Publishers Weekly

The final sentence of Child's ninth suspenser (after The Enemy)—"Then he could buy a pair of shoes and be just about anywhere before the sun went down"—is quintessential Jack Reacher, the rugged ex-army cop who practically defines the word "loner" and kicks ass with the best of 'em. In the book's gripping opening, five people are killed when a shooter opens fire in a small unnamed Indiana city. But when ex-infantry specialist James Barr is apprehended, he refuses to talk, saying only, "Get Jack Reacher for me." But Reacher's already en route; having seen a news story on the shooting, he heads to the scene with disturbing news of his own: "[Barr's] done this before. And once was enough." Nothing is what it seems in the riveting puzzle, as vivid set pieces and rapid-fire dialogue culminate in a slam-bang showdown in the villains' lair. (And what villains: a quintet of Russian émigrés, the stuff of everybody's worst nightmares, led by a wily 80-year-old who makes Freddy Krueger look like Little Lord Fauntleroy.) As usual, Child makes the most of Reacher's dry wit, cut-to-the-chase psychology and stubborn taciturnity—in short, this is a vintage double play for author and leading man.

From AudioFile

Six hours after a sniper killed five passersby coming out of an office building in the Indiana heartland, the police had James Barr in custody. It was a slam dunk, an open-and-shut case. But Jack Reacher doesn't think so. It was too neat. Reacher has reasons for wanting to see Barr in prison or worse, so why does Barr ask for Reacher's help? Before Reacher can get any answers, Barr is beaten and left in a coma. Dick Hill's reading is tight and crisp, giving characters fully fleshed personalities and believable accents. As the case evolves into a full-fledged conspiracy, Hill puts tension into his reading to make this audiobook the ultimate disc-turner. S.E.S. 5.0étoiles sur 5 Best Reacher yet!, Aoû 10 2005
Par Un client
Lee Child has outdone himself with One Shot! Outstanding novel - possibly one of his best yet in the Jack Reacher series. This novel has it all - suspense, kick-ass crime, really BAD guys, great humour, and Reacher is smart, sexy, tough as nails (did I mention sexy), and highly intelligent. Plus this book is packed with the best hand-to-hand combat scenes done thus far in any Reacher book.

"The Hard Way" is the next one forthcoming - bring it on!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Reacher is back and better than ever!, Jui 24 2005
This is Jack Reacher at his best! Six Shots and five people dead in an American midwest city. The police catch the sniper, the only problem is the guy claims he did not do it. In come Reacher and in his indominatable way he turns the case inside out and upside down. The Jack Reacher character is brilliant, multi-layered, but most of all, he kicks ass when he needs to and always gets the girl. One Shot was extremely well written, suspenseful and twisted and turned like all his others, but I think the characterizations of Reacher in this one is probably not as deep as in the previous book, but for a plot driven thriller, it's five stars all the way. Nothing is as it seems in this gritty thriller. This and "A Tourist in the Yucatan" are my favorite thriller reads of 2005!

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The Jack Reacher novels had me hooked from the first line of the first book. The 7th book, The Persuader, was a bit disapointing. But the series redeemed itself with the 8th book (The Enemy) and now, this one, One Shot.

Jack is at his best. He's a loner with a borderline case of "not my problem" attitude. But when he gets pulled in, he puts himself all in and goes all out. He's a sort of hero, not by choice but by carreer. He's left the army, he's no longer enforcing the law but it's in his blood. So when he sees injustice, he gets involved.

In this book, Reacher gets involved when he sees a news clip and recognizes a man he once made a promise to : Step out of line again and I will find you. So when Reacher hears the man has killed, he goes to find him. But not all is as it first seemed and Reacher is left to adjust and rethink the situation.

Once again, a good book from L. Child. Can't wait for the next installment.
