Product Description

From Amazon.com

Literary slugger John Grisham returns with a story about-- surprise!--a lawyer in trouble. Patrick Lanigan had been a young partner in a prominent Southern law firm. He had a beautiful wife, a new baby girl, and a bright future. Then one winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car; the casket they buried held nothing but ashes.

A short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial then fled. A fortune was stolen from his ex-firm's offshore account. And Patrick ran, covering his tracks the whole way.

But, now, they've found him. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of a Flawed Legal Genius, May 10 2008
A great lawyer is meticulous, calculating, aggressive, relentless, and prepared for anything. John Grisham lovingly shares an intricate plot to provide you with an unforgettable portrait of those qualities in action. In the process, you'll also see a man whose soul is offended by his profession.

Ultimately, this book is about a dream . . . a dream that may be more dangerous than an addictive drug. What will you do to capture your dream? That's what you'll be asking yourself after you read The Partner.

The beginning of the book seems like an international espionage thriller. A group of private detectives track down a fugitive to a little town in Brazil near the border with Paraguay. They pounce, and the fugitive is in for his worst nightmare . . . remorseless torture aimed at getting him to tell something he doesn't know.

Soon, an unlikely intervention creates a whole new vector for the story. The fugitive has to face the music from a lot of angry lawyers . . . including his former partners.

Like many legal thrillers, you'll be getting no more information than you need to know to follow the action. Pay attention to the questions that occur to you: Thinking about what might have happened is half the fun of this book.

If you aren't interested in the ins and outs of how lawyers think about criminal issues, you won't like this book as much as I did. I was impressed at how well the legal issues were displayed without being too technical. Remember that lawyers usually spend a lot of time thinking through how the opposing attorney will respond to various probes.

Watch out for the unexpected!

4.0 out of 5 stars Second best is still great, Jul 27 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Partner (Hardcover)
The best book John Grisham ever wrote was THE FIRM. Not much can compete with that, but THE PARTNER comes darn close! The idea of this book is really the plot of THE FIRM in reverse. This is the story of one guy who "comes back to life" after faking his death. Extremely clever and witty (what's new with Grisham?) this one is a keeper. Also recommend (and completely different) THE BARK OF THE DOGWOOD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak Enterntainment, Jul 7 2004
By William Plowden (Centreville, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I picked this book of the top of a stack that my friend was planning on giving to the library. It is the hardback version, and I simply have a weakness for free hardbacks. Yes, I know I'm a freak....
Most of my exposure to Grisham has been through the movies that were made from his books, so I'm not too familiar with his actual writing. The Partner is a very quick read, coming in around 350 pages in hardback, this is a fairly straight forward story.
Patrick Lanigan has faked his death and stolen $90 million of his former firms ill gotten gains. The story really starts at his capture in Brazil and lays out the "how he done it" over the course of the book. The problem for me was that the book devolved into characatures instead of buidling interesting people to follow. It just seemed too formulaic at times and way too many things just fell into place to be believable. In hollywood when an proven actor/actress stars in a bomb and doesn't appear to try it is generally said the actor "dialed it in". I think Grisham did the same here.
Frankly, a lot of reviews here didn't like the ending, but that was really my favorite part. Wasn't too much of a surprise, but boy did it give me some satisfaction. All in all, there are other things you can be reading for pure entertainment, but this book wasn't totally lacking some redeeming qualities.
