From Publishers Weekly

In his first book in six years, Hailey ( Airport ; Hotel ; etc.) links the infamous Medellin drug cartel with the violent revolutionaries of Sendero Luminoso --"the Shining Path"--a Maoist terrorist group that in this scorcher kidnaps the family of CBA-TV news anchor Crawford Sloane. After a slow, creaky start, and despite a pasteboard cast of guerillas who shoot off more stilted phrases than bullets, the story moves with speed and heat as Crawford's valiant wife Jessica, her young son Nicky and flinty father-in-law are smuggled in coffins to Peru, then marched to a steaming, remote jungle village. Back in the States, heavy-weight correspondent Harry Partridge, Jessica's old lover, spearheads an investigation that the network's slimy parent company, Globanic Industries, tries to hamper. Gripping behind-the-scenes action at CBA-TV and a vivid primer on terrorist tactics pepper the boiling pot. Credibility gaps in the final chapters are paved over by sheer, reckless drama. Literary Guild main selection; Reader's Digest Condensed Book Club selection.

From Library Journal

For years superstar anchorman Crawford Sloane and legendary correspondent Harry Partridge have been professional and personal rivals: yet it is to Partridge that Sloane turns when the woman they both love, Sloane's wife, is kidnapped by terrorists. This latest offering from Arthur Hailey, his first novel since Strong Medicine (LJ 10/15/84), follows the winning formula that has made his previous books best sellers. By pairing exhaustive, penetrating research with an exciting and taut story, Hailey gives us a fresh behind-the-scenes look at a complex and topical industry. So what if characterization is not one of Hailey's strengths, or if it's hard to swallow the coincidence that a rich, suburban housewife who gets kidnapped just happens to have taken lessons in CQB (close quarters battle) classes that sure come in handy in captivity. A winner just the same. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 12/89 . -- Lydia Burruel Johnson, Mesa P.L., Ariz.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A page-turner, very exciting, though the plot is a stretch, Déc 1 2000
This review is from: The Evening News (Paperback)
We are asked to believe that one of the talking heads on the tv news is an adventure hero, taking on international terrorists. Can you just picture Dan Rather or Peter Jennings with a machine gun? Okay. Once you get past that, the rest of the book is believable. Well.......... not exactly. We are also asked to believe that the tv news is more capable of solving a terrorist crime than the FBI or CIA is. I hope that's not true. The networks and the FBI are painted as being antagonistic towards each other, not working together.

Now for the positives. This book gets you involved. The final dozens of pages are like the homestretch of a good horserace. You won't want to put it down. Despite my complaints, I have given this book the top rating. Entertainment value counts for a lot.

The one thing I disliked most about Hailey's writing was that he resorted to a cheap trick to entangle us in a sub-plot. The sad love story of Harry and Gemma was told to us in Perils of Pauline fashion, a chunk at a time, with lots of pages in between the various parts. Harry reminisced to a point, left us hanging, then picked up the sad story many pages later. It was offensively manipulative of the author. By the end, I wanted to kill Gemma off to be rid of the hokey technique.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Real characters and rich themes-a GREAT book!, Fév 17 1999

This review is from: The Evening News (Paperback)
It has been a long time since I have read a book that made me say "WOW" when I was done. Arthur Hailey brings the characters alive-they have depth. Mr. Hailey has mixed real life city situations that we can all relate to with the romantic, (yet dangerous), South America. Harry Partridge is a man you can't help but relate to-and you cheer him on the whole way!

This author really gets you into the action, I love the way he writes and the very extense vocabulary he uses. I read it in Spanish but I'd enjoy reading it in English
