Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The psychotherapist whose books (including the novel The Best Little Girl in the World) have illuminated the nature and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anorexia nervosa and bulimia now shines the spotlight on another misunderstood behavioral disorder: self-mutilation. Levenkron begins by advising desensitization to the disturbing wounds, scars and blood-letting patients inflict upon themselves, redirecting focus toward the underlying issues. He likens cutting to OCD in that it is a compulsive act meant to relieve unbearable emotional pain, and to eating disorders in that it is a method of seizing control. Like anorexics, most cutters are girls, unable to express anger toward others, instead turning it against themselves. Levenkron is careful to explain that cutting is not the same as body piercing or tattooing, which reflect "adolescent trendiness," and that cutters are not suicidal, their wounds life-threatening only rarely and accidentally. Cutting is done secretly, "usually in a trancelike state," and "the act of creating pain... or drawing blood, is in itself the goal." Cutters then develop an "addiction" to this method of exchanging physical pain for emotional pain. With many examples from his practice, Levenkron provides clear and comprehensive information on the causes and effective treatments of this mysterious disorder, specific advice for therapists and an encouraging sense of hope for patients and their families.

Review

"Levenkron understands the need for sharing basic information about this taboo subject... As a therapist who has worked with this problem for more than 20 years, he has much to offer." New England Journal of Medicine "Levenkron diminishes the horror of self-harming, promotes understanding and offers hope. Similarly, through being inclusive he addresses the needs of sufferers, their families and health professionals alike... With compassion and patience... He demystifies the condition and brings it into the mainstream of medical practice. He's also very readable." New Statesman"

5.0 out of 5 stars Much needed, Aug 12 2004
By A Customer
Obviously not for everyone, this is a much needed book for those of us who practice this "art form" and for relatives and friends who want to know more. Levenkron has written many books on subjects such as OCD and he knows his stuff. He's great at explaining the difference between the piercing fads sweeping teenagers and the real "cuttings." It's about exchanging physical pain for the emotional pain. If you're interested in books that deal with emotional pain, repressed memories, and child abuse (all of which can be the trigger for cutting), you may be interested in two books: A BRIGHT RED SCREAM and THE BARK OF THE DOGWOOD. Both are not for the squeamish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuts to the skin, a product of the soul, Jun 18 2004
By Danielle (Union, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
I read this book because it was on my roommate's (who happens to be a youth crisis counselor)bookcase. For the first time ever, I realized I wasn't the only one who does this. And suddenly, the need to do it began to deminish. As I read on, I began to understand the eating disorders I was also experiencing. As well as the periodic dissociative episodes. I entered therapy, and have been on the track to recovery ever since. Dr. Levenkron's look at these disorders through the eyes of a cross-section of pacients as well as his own proved enlightening.

While he points out different disfunctions of family life and how they negatively impact his pacients, predisposing them to eating and self mutilation disorders, readers who feel his opinion is a pious one need read deeper, and look deeper. One must confront the situation for what it is in order to learn new coping mechanisms that prove to be less destructive. This does not mean that to speak of the issue is to "blame" others, but rather identify the root causes. To verbalise these things is against the self-mutilator's natural behavior. Learning to use words, rather than actions against one's self, to punish one's self. Learning that the flaws of others do not need to equal hurt on your own body. Although I have confronted many demons in my quest for recovery, I have not "blamed" anyone, or seen them as anything "worse" than I saw them before...in fact, I now see these people in a better light, less recklace than I remember thinking of them from childhood, and more as flawed humans, such as myself. They harbored the same fears I did, but theirs manifested outward. Mine, just the opposite.

In short, one must critisize the behavior, and not the individual behind it. As long as a reader is willing to see things in this way, this book will not only prove helpful; but will find no limit to their successful recovery.

This is a great book which gives anyone wanting to know more insight and a good honest look at the disorder of cutting. Anyone wanting to feel comfort from their isolation of cutting will find many things very relevant and at home.
