Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4–Narrator Elizabeth Sastre beautifully brings to life the story of three British orphans and their loving caretakers in Noel Streatfield's Ballet Shoes (Random, 1937). Pauline, Petrova, and Posie start life off as carefree children, but when their adopted Great Uncle Max (a.k.a. Gum) disappears on a fossil hunting expedition, the young girls find themselves becoming the breadwinners of the family. As stage performers they are able to give back to the only family they have ever known, and have their own adventures while they're at it. This charming and often humorous story stands the test of time. The strong female characters solve many conflicts on their own. In the end, each girl is also able to choose her own path in life. Sastre gives each character a distinctive voice and conveys the warmth and vivacity of the story, making this a highly enjoyable audiobook.–April Mazza, Wayland Public Library, MA --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

3.0 out of 5 stars Fondly remembered, Jun 15 2000
I haven't read this book in years. I was thrilled, however, when Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail) identifies the "Shoes" books for a customer and adds that Ballet Shoes was her favorite. It was mine, too--in fact, I was so enthralled with it that I really couldn't get into the others.

I'm sure that if I re-read it now, I would find it both dated and unrealistic. As a child, though, I enjoyed it thoroughly. It can't possibly be for everyone, but I'd bet that young girls who love ballet (and I was one) will still enjoy this book today.

Ballet Shoes

Noel Streatfeild has written a lot of great books. But this book is one of my favorite books that she has written. It is about three baby girls who get adopted by this old man named Matthew. To the girls he is their Great Uncle Matthew (G.U.M. for short!). They all live in London, England on Cromwell Road in a big brick house with his niece Sylvia who is sort of like their mother. Later in the story the girls go into this Five Star Dancing Academy and they all learn ballet, they perform in shows and concerts. That's why it is called Ballet Shoes. Uncle Matthew is poor because he collets fossils which are pretty rare. Museums all over London want most of his fossils and want to pay him back for them but he said "no thank you" every time. He goes on journeys overseas and land to find more fossils for his collection. When he comes across the three babies, Pauline, Petrova and last, but not least Posy, he brings them all home to live with him and they grow up. What will their life be when they grow up? Find out and read the book!

Some of the themes in the story are: helping other people in need and having trust and being respectful; for example, one of their concerts, Pauline and Petrova are helping other kids in hospitals by doing a concert called the Blue Bird. When people buy the tickets the money goes toward the hospital. Also, by becoming better dancers they get to do more concerts and they get more money to bring home and spend on things they need. Another theme in the story is trust in other people, like the director and people that take care of them, Nana and Sylvia and having trust in them. And also being respectful to people who are trying to help them, their friends. I think these themes in this story can teach you life long lessons that you can use through out your life and more people in the world will want to hangout with you and work with you.

The story is placed in London, England. London is the capital and largest city of the United Kingdom, on the Thames River in southeast England. It was built on the site of the Roman outpost called: Londinium. The Star Dancing Academy is a real theatre. It has a lot of theaters and dance academy's there. After a couple of years the girls grow up and they go to this Star Dancing Academy, where they all learn to dance beautifully. After they learn to dance beautifully they get to be in a lot of different concerts and shows.

The author's writing style is very creative. She uses a lot of juicy words which make the story more interesting to read. Ballet Shoes is a fictional book. It is a very descriptive novel. The book also teaches you life long lessons that you can use in life to become a better person and help to make people want to hang out with you more!

The characters in this story are Great Uncle Matthew (G.U.M), Sylvia, Nana, Pauline, Petrova, Posy, Chef and the Boarders. Nana lives with Uncle Matthew and Sylvia with Pauline, Petrova, and Posy (of course!) The Boarders also move in with them later on. These borders who move into the house and since the girls are too busy dancing for school the boarders are there teachers. I find Great Uncle Matthew a very nice old man. He is always kind to people but he is mean to them only if they are bossing him around for example: sometimes Nana is bossing him about his fossils and that he should give some away.

This book is cute, funny and entertaining. I really recommend this book if you want a great read. This book should be read by people ages: Ten and up because little kids may not be able to understand the author's use of words. I loved reading this book, and you would really enjoy it too! (I hope!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good news!, Mar 26 2002
By "gwynhwyvhar" (Cleveland, OH, USA) - See all my reviews
As a longtime fan of the "Shoes" series, I was delighted to see these wonderful books featured in "You've Got Mail". Anyone who has ever dreamed of being a performer will love these books about children who share those dreams, and are working to make them come true. For those who are trying to find their own copy of some of these books, I have good news. Some of the books that are no longer in print in the States are still available in the UK, including "Skating Shoes" (otherwise known as "White Boots". ...
