From Publishers Weekly

Cook constructs a promising yet ultimately wearying plot around the issue of therapeutic cloning, picking up where his last novel, Shock, left off. Readers are once again privy to the morally questionable goings on at the Wingate Infertility Clinic in the Bahamas, but its doctors are side players here. Leading the action is former Harvard biotech ace Daniel Lowell, who has formed his own company to investigate a cloning technique in which a patient with an incurable disease is returned to health through the injection of stem cells. In this case the disease is Parkinson's, and the patient is Ashley Butler, a conservative U.S. senator from the South. For political reasons, Butler opposes the legalization of Lowell's technique. Yet Butler-given about a year to live-is willing to switch sides if Lowell agrees to try out the treatment on him first. The kicker is that the fundamentalist Butler wants the stem cells injected into his brain to come from a very specific source: the Shroud of Turin, the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Cook provides plenty of action as well as polemical asides about the ethics of cloning (he believes politics intrudes far too often into medical and biotech issues), yet readers waiting for a jolt or a revelation will be disappointed. Cook occasionally lets loose the propulsive narrative force that characterizes his best work, but much of the plot is stale and contrived. Readers will have to endure characters who fail to stir emotions (such as a band of corny mobsters), as well as descriptions of Bahamanian resorts that read like paid promotional material.

From AudioFile

Daniel Lowell, a stem cell researcher, has developed a way to change a person's DNA, and Senator Ashley Butler wants to be the first to try it to forestall his Parkinson's disease. So how can he do this without anyone knowing? That's the gist of this medical thriller, as only Robin Cook can write them. Dylan Baker performs this story of deceit, self-betrayal, and medical ethics with aplomb, focusing especially on character development as the conspiracy unfolds. The timely issue of stem cell research is explored with all of its negative ramifications. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

1.0étoiles sur 5 So So, Juil 9 2007
Par Toni Osborne "The Way I See It" (Montreal, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Seizure (Paperback)

This book is not a medical thriller as some may expect from Cook but a novel full of actions that deals with hired killers dashing from country to country. I must admit the scenarios presented board the ridiculous at times and the ending left me totally disappointed. But in the whole this novel is mildly pleasant

1.0étoiles sur 5 Insultingl;y sloppy work from a former decent writer, Juil 19 2004
This review is from: Seizure (Hardcover)
Robin Cook has produced some intriguing and entertaining novels in the distant past. Even if his work was always stamped with a trademark formula, and was largely "by the numbers" and overly plot-driven, his earlier work nonetheless provided a bit of interest. His thrillers were thrilling, as they should be. "Seizure," however, is remarkably bad. The characterizations are nothing more than cartoons. This isn't even "plot driven," as the novel is so weak, and so flimsy, that it barely has a plot. It is as if Cook had a pretty good idea for a book, then turned the assignment of actually writing it over to his 20 year-old neice (or whomever, but someone of dubious writing talent). The poor craftsmanship and crappy execution of this lame attempt is offensive to me. Cook has demonstrated in the past that he has talent for churning out readable thrillers. If his work has now dropped to this low of a level, however, he may soon find himself out of a market for even his pulp fiction product. Avoid this book! And if you know Cook, tell him he owes me six quid, the price of his lastest ghastly mess.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Not a good "Cook", Jui 17 2004
Par Un client
This review is from: Seizure (Hardcover)
I was very disappointed by this book.
Besides the complicated and improbable scenario, the style itself is aweful. It seems Cook took pleasure to show off his knowledge of complicated words and sentences. The dialogues are completely irrealistic:

"My eagerness at having finally gotten here to Nassau has me fired up, whereas in actuality I'm bushed too."

"If it goes down easily and if the flight schedule is copacetic, maybe you can do it in one day."

"copacetic"? "whereas in actuality"? Who speaks like that? Come on...

Many books by Cook are very good. This one is to forget as quickly as possible.
