I was just browsing around online one day and came across this book. I thought well it sounds interesting maybe I will try reading the 1st chapter from the website. Right away I loved how the young boy "Cooper" would explain his feelings how he felt betrayed by his parents sending him out to the middle of nowhere "deadwood" in black hills with his grandparents he barely knew. I thought well maybe one day I'd get it, just put it on my list.

I noticed the book on sale when I was out and thought what the heck I'll try it. I am so happy I picked this book up! What an amazing story! The characters were just so loveable and down to earth, just like "your own family".

It starts with "Cooper" being shipped off to his grandparents out in the middle of nowhere because his mom and dad were going on vacation (i.e. a troubled marriage). He hated this because he was a city boy from New York. What was he to do? He couldn't even think about being without his TV and video games, let alone all the Yankee games he would miss, he got to see all of them because his father owned box seats. All they had at his grandparents were horses and cows and dirt and stuff. That summer changed his life in so many ways! In the beginning "Coop and Lil" would have to meet; something he was not looking forward to but thought he would have to endure it because his grandparents were friends with her parents and he would be nothing but respectful for them. This girl it turns out isn't so bad, she is pretty good at playing ball and isn't like any other girls back home. They immediately become friends and intend to stay that way. So much happens in the book as the story follows Cooper and his "black hills" family from childhood into their teens and then into their 30's. This book is definitely a must have. I couldn't put it down, I read it all in one day! This is not just a story of love, heartbreak, and trust. One of the summer nights they come across a dead body, not knowing if it was an animal attack or human violence. You think your never going to find out... then the suspense of the early on "unexplained" death from their childhood haunts them later in life. It is so real I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation of what was going to happen next. The ride this story takes you on is just... well ... amazing! I say go buy it and ENJOY!

Black Hills was my "beach read" this summer, I guess. Reading it, I thought it was just like the Nora Roberts' movie adaptations I've watched this past year: romance, woman-in-jeopardy, thrilling resolution when there is not much time or pages left. And there is nothing wrong with that, is there?
