Earth: expensive, elite graveyard to the galaxy. Ravaged 10,000 years earlier by war, Earth was reclaimed by its space-dwelling offspring as a planet of landscaping and tombstones. 5.0 out of 5 stars Cemetery World, Oct 1 2001
By Justin Carlyle (the Midwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cemetery World (Paperback)
I've been reading Simak since the 1950s, and consider
Cemetery World to be one of his finest. Despite a somewhat
implausible premise, he once again delivered a gem that
emphasized his pastoral, humane nature. There are elements of
City here, and some of his other masterpieces. It is a
delightful read, especially late at night when the fires
burn high and a cold wind tries to get past the shutters!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not his best, Mar 18 2001
By Peter Lorentzen (Berkeley, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cemetery World (Paperback)
I picked up this book at the used bookstore, based on fond memories of Simak's other works, like "City." This far-far future tale of people returned to a long abandoned Earth has a little of the flavor of Norton's Witch World, or Cordwainer Smith's stories. But the characters are neither powerful mythic archetypes, nor fully-fleshed out human beings. The details also get confused--somehow the whole planet seems to have been reduced to a rather small chunk of territory for the convenience of the plot rather than any inherent logic. And the technology seems like too simple a linear extrapolation of mid-20th century high-tech. This one hasn't stood the test of time.
