All of Sutcliff's books are superb - even before I found Lady in Waiting at the library I knew it would be very, very good. And it is, though it is different.. it's the story of Sir Walter Raleigh's wife, Bess, and the patient love she has for him, though he leaves her and leaves her for with his intense need for exploration and adventure. Usually Sutcliff writes from the point of view from the adventurer. This time she writes from the point of view of the one who must stay at home, worried sick about their loved one. Bess is 'not the stuff of Spartan mothers' which she admits ruefully, and struggles with her intensely focused husband. But no matter the point of view, it is still a bittersweet and noble tale of love and adventure, which is what I've come to expect from Sutcliff's pen.
