From Publishers Weekly

Aging movie actress Charlotte Graham has two reasons for accepting her stepdaughter Marsha Lundstrom's invitation to join her on a study tour to Dunhuang, an isolated oasis in northwestern China: first, she possesses a lively sense of adventure; second, she has learned that a friend's stolen Chinese statue may resurface in Dunhuang, the probably site of its origin. While in Dunhuang, Marsha hopes to translate ancient poetry manuscripts; the place also attracts scholars in other areas. Once arrived, American paleontologist Larry Fiske announces that he has made "the greatest dinosaur fossil find of the century." Before the nature of his find can be revealed, Larry is found dead of stab wounds and Charlotte puts her sleuthing skills to work. But with so much text devoted to tidbits on paleontology and Chinese history and culture (though intriguing and well integrated), it sometimes seems like the occasional corpse is just another fillip. Matteson's ( Murder on the Cliff ) adventure will charm readers who enjoy the mingling of several flavors but may try the patience of those who want their murder straight up.

2.0étoiles sur 5 I really didn't like the main character., Déc 7 2003

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I agree with the reviewers who noted that the book was well-researched, but still unsatisfying. I gave it an extra star precisely for that research, but that shouldn't imply it's worth reading. Because unfortunately, it isn't.

Matteson needs to go back to some basics and learn how to write characters. Charlotte Graham is entirely unbelievable and the plots are incredible, even by cozy standards. As much as I wanted to give her extra points for the clear research efforts, I just couldn't. My credulity as a reader was constantly being strained to the breaking point.

Skip this one, unless you're really bored.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Interesting background material; unbelievable heroine, Jui 7 1999
Par Un client
As with most of the Matteson's I've read so far, this one is well-researched, and presents some interesting background info (I'm convinced Matteson must be the nom de plume of an academic of some kind). Problems remain with our dauntless heroine, Charlotte. Why must she be so perfect? The author takes shots at all of the other characters (especially other women) but her heroine is so perfect (five academy awards--give me a break!!) she's awful. Loosen up Matteson! Silk Road is perhaps her best attempt yet.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Verbose, Oct. 23 1998
Page after page of words that take you no where. Paragraph after paragraph with no relief in sight. The main character is a snob and the writer must be a drone. I have read two of these soporifics and that was two too many. Read two Mattesons and call me in the morning...

5.0étoiles sur 5 This book presented a fascinating history of China.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I learned a lot of interesting facts pertaining to China. The plot kept me guessing all the way through the book, too. Read more
