Product Description

From Amazon.com

It's 2006, and Commander Amanda Lee Garrett has just taken charge of a top-secret Stealth-type U.S. Navy warship. She's never been in action, but her learning curve--and our own level of reading excitement--rapidly accelerates when Argentina decides to take back some territory it used to own in Antarctica. Commander Garrett is a wonderfully rich character dropped into a totally plausible dilemma, and James H. Cobb is good at making the intricate details of high-tech weaponry both fascinating and accessible.

Ingram

In the icy waters of the desolate Antarctic, a lone British outpost is taken over by Argentinean forces. The world's only immediate defense is the USS Cunningham, America's first stealth warship, whose female commander is untested in battle. So begins the ultimate showdown--a white-knuckled adventure of new warriors and new weapons, as realistic as it is terrifying.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book - less than one star if possible, Feb 18 2004

This review is from: Choosers Of The Slain (Hardcover)
As a Naval Officer with 18 years experience, I read this book expecting to be entertained. This author obviously knows nothing about the Navy, ships, the national chain of command after 1986, or character development. The only saving grace is that I borrowed this book from the library and did not spend money on it. It is so bad I feel the need to prevent other people from giving this author and publishing house money. Simple things as calling a "dipping sonar" a "dunking sonar" and the "1MC" circuit the "MC-1" seriously reduce the readability of the book and the credibility of the author. Intelligence officers do not deploy on destroyers and the interaction between the crews and the CO was shallow, uninteresting, and unrealistic. The idea of a woman Commanding Officer is not novel now, and it was only marginally interesting in 1996 when the book was published. The plot line that places the destroyer of the future in Antarctica is barely believable at best, and silly throughout. In a few words, no relation to naval operations at the time written, inaccurate details of ship life, and shallow character and plot development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention Getting and kept me all the way through., Oct 4 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Choosers Of The Slain (Hardcover)
I especially liked the development of the plot and characters. The characters were well diversified and had some realistic personality conflicts, yet they didn't let it get in the away of doing their jobs. This book kept me on the edge and completely enthralled up to and including the last page. I look forward to his next book with great enthusiasm!
