Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Dr. Temperance Brennan's quest to identify two corpses pits her against citizen vigilantes intent on a witch-hunt in bestseller Reichs's exciting 11th thriller to feature the forensic anthropologist (after 2007's Bones to Ashes). While working in Charlotte, N.C., Brennan investigates remains unearthed during a housing renovation and discovers disturbing clues possibly pointing to voodoo or Santeria. She must determine if the bones, including the skull of a teenage girl, are linked to an unidentified headless torso found in a nearby lake. Intent on using the deaths as the cornerstone of his crusade against immorality, fundamentalist preacher turned politician Boyce Lingo claims that the bodies bear the mark of devil worshippers. With the help of Det. Erskine Skinny Slidell, Brennan unearths a tangled web of dirty politics, religious persecution and male prostitution. Reichs, whose work inspired the hit TV series Bones, once again expertly blends science and complex character development. (Aug.) ""

Review

Several troubling cases await forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan (Bones to Ashes, 2007, etc.) back home in Charlotte, N.C.Tempe Brennan's personal life is in tatters. Her love, a Montreal cop called Ryan, has gone back to his lover in hopes of stabilizing their troubled daughter; Tempe's ex is about to marry a much younger woman; and her daughter Katy is utterly bored with her job. A call to examine a skull found in a hidden floor space plunges Tempe into a case that may involve ritual murder. The skull and some kettles containing bones and various fetishes suggesting Santer'a or some other alternative religion may tie in with two headless bodies, one found floating in a river and another marked with Satanic symbols. Furious when a local politician uses the cases as an excuse to whip up hostility against little-understood religions, Tempe is far from convinced that the Wiccan who is arrested is guilty. When Rinaldi, one of the detectives she's working with, is killed in a drive-by, Tempe falls off the wagon but soldiers on, mortified, until she finally makes the connections between the crimes that lead to a close call with death and a startling conclusion. Not Reichs's best, but a meticulously laid-out case that offers a deeper look into her heroine's personal life. 2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking Suspence, Aug 8 2009

Temperance Brennan, book 11

The story starts when Brennan is called to an abandoned home where a worker discovers a gruesome display of remains in cauldrons amongst religious artifacts and skulls. Tempe discovers that some of the remains are human and digs deep to unearth the truth.

The main stream reader will be disappointed with the ho hum start and a story highly focused on the major cults and fringe religions. The over abundance of forensics details and history of Charlotte has crossed the line, it is more educational than entertaining, not what one would expect in a mystery novel.

The plot picks up marginally towards the end but there are so many predictable elements and lack of suspense that I can't say I enjoyed this latest installment.

This was a great suspense book to read. I really enjoyed getting to know the main character in the book Temperance "Tempe" Brennan. She is a forensic anthropologist and knows death inside out.
I have never read Kathy Riechs before and now I want to go back and start at the beginning with Tempe. I was very interested to know that Kathy Riechs is the producer of the television show Bones.
So for all you forensic junkies this is a great book to devour.

Better than Patricia Cornwell, but that ain't sayin' much. I'm not a big fan of the mystery genre except perhaps for Iain Rankin and PD James, and more recently the excellent Steig Larsson. She does the technical side very well, but the prose is a bit purple for my taste. Okay light summer read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable enough
This is the first Kathy Reichs' I've read. It's not exactly literature, but it's an enjoyable-enough summer read. I think the show ("Bones") is more fun.

Kathy Reichs never disappoints me. I believe I have read most of her books. I like how she brought in different beliefs that are not well understood into this story. Read more
