From Publishers Weekly

The latest from the author of The Godfather is a surefire success, a political novel that starts with a terrorist assassination of the pope on Easter Sunday, a deed that sends global aftershocks to jolt the power strongholds around the world, from the palace of the sultan of Sherhaben to the White House. The U.S. president is charismatic Francis Xavier Kennedy, scion of the famed and ill-fated clan. Still mourning his dead wife, Kennedy turns his energies to the country's betterment, forging an idealistic "new social contract." But Kennedy is also a target of the terrorists, whose mentalities the novel deftly probes: Romeo, a "Christ of Violence," needs to atone for his pampered upbringing; Yabril, a fierce Arab, privately thirsts to smite--like the angel Azazel--the president's daughter Theresa. After an appalling crime is committed, Kennedy coldly vows to bomb Sherhaben off the map, despite the American fortunes invested there. His cabinet and the wily, aged members of the Socrates Club--who control grain, real estate, oil, the media and Congress--plot to impeach him. Random acts of violence by young Americans (e.g., naive MIT scientists who plant a mini-atom bomb in Manhattan) enliven and multiply the dangers. Within the male power hierarchy, capable women like vice-president Helen Du Pray calculate their moves. Astute characterizations, vivid drama and Puzo's shrewd analyses of the paradoxes of evil detonate a top-notch thriller.

Product Description

A PRESIDENTIAL DYNASTY. AN ARAB TERRORIST ATTACK. DEMOCRACY UNDER SIEGE. Mario Puzo envisioned it all in his eerily prescient 1991 novel, The Fourth K.

President Francis Xavier Kennedy is elected to office, in large part, thanks to the legacy of his forebears–good looks, privilege, wealth–and is the very embodiment of youthful optimism. Too soon, however, he is beaten down by the political process and, disabused of his ideals, he becomes a leader totally unlike what he has been before.

When his daughter becomes a pawn in a brutal terrorist plot, Kennedy, who has obsessively kept alive the memory of his uncles’ assassinations, activates all his power to retaliate in a series of violent measures. As the explosive events unfold, the world and those closest to him look on with both awe and horror. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars THE PRESIDENTIAL CRISIS THAT WILL KEEP YOU TURNING PAGES, May 24 2004

If you like novels in which the President of the United States is central to the plot this one's for you. Mario Puzo could always tell a good story, and this one is no exception. (By the way, this book dealt with an impeachment process LONG before Bill Clinton became president.)
Good summer reading. I hope you enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Typical Mario Puzo, Mar 7 2004

If you're a Mario Puzo fan, then this book will be enjoyable to you.

It's an entertaining, good story. As with most of Puzo's books, it shows a different side of life than the one most of us are familiar with.

I recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Exploration of Power, Jan 23 2001
By Bryan A. Pfleeger (Metairie, Louisiana United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Fourth K (Hardcover)
Mario Puzo developed one dominant theme in all of his writings. The theme was man's acquisition and use of power. Whether it be the power of criminal connections in the Godfather and its sequels or of the President of the United States in the Fourth K, Puzo explored the notion in depth.

The Fourth K was not a commercial success. At times it political thriller plot seems a little contrived but Puzo kept hammering on the notion of what absolute power can do to an essentially good man.

Francis Kennedy becomes evil not through any particular desire to commit bad acts but through his desire to do good and out of a notion of caring for his country. When terrorists strike at the United States by kidnapping and killing the daughter of the President he uses his enormous power to exact his revenge and to make the world a better place. This use of power puts the President essentially on the same level as the terrorist.

While the ending of this book is somewhat contrived, I feel that it is a book worth reading if you are a fan. However if you are interested in this genre there are better authors out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read.
This is classic Puzo. Puzo mixs it up with this Tom Clancy like book. Only its the political persona instead of the mafia. Puzo doesn't dissapoint.
