Product Description

They were torn between pride and passion. . .

It was a boastful wager, a bold flirtation meant to win a proposal from the most eligible officer in His Majesty's Royal Dragoons.  How was the spoiled and pampered Catherine Augustine Ashbrooke to know the handsome stranger with the brooding midnight eyes would see through her plot and make her the pawn in a dangerous game of his own?

United by a reckless game of chance. . .

Alexander Cameron may have won the highborn English beauty in a duel, but not even the lure of long-forgotten desires could keep him from his meeting with destiny.  He had no choice but to carry his reluctant bride off to the Highlands, to a world of ancient blood feuds and a brewing rebellion--a world where fiery passion and breathtaking courage would prove that even legendary warriors could lose their hearts.

Bestselling, award-winning author Marsha Canham sweeps us into the turbulence and romance of Scotland's quest for freedom in a saga of two born enemies whose lives and destinies are irrevocably bound to the fate of an empire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story, Feb 20 2009
By Amie (Canada) - See all my reviews
This was my first novel of Marsha Canham and I thouroughly enjoyed it. The story line and plot were realistic and entertaining. The characters were well developed and I truly felt a connection to the main characters. I found myself laughing at times, and I loved the dialogue between all of the characters it was very clever and fresh. Everything that you could want in a great read. The history of the jacobite rebellion and what follows at culloden is something that I love to read about although it is so heartbreaking. I cannot wait to read The Blood of Roses which I ordered immediately after finishing this novel. Marsha Canham is a smart and classic novelist who I will add among my book collections as someone truly among my favorite reads.

4.0 out of 5 stars PRIDE COMETH BEFORE THE FALL..., Nov 26 2007
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)

This is a romantic historical novel that will keep the reader turning the pages. Steeped in Scottish and English history during the time of the Jacobite rebellion, the author finely hones the romance against this tumultuous historical backdrop. While I am not particularly enamored of romance novels, this one certainly kept my interest due to the author's attention to historical detail.

When eighteen year old Catherine Ashbrooke, the spoiled minx of a daughter of a Member of Parliament, plots to get a handsome lieutenant in the Royal Dragoons to propose marriage to her, her plan backfires. Instead, she finds herself forced by her father into a shotgun wedding with a veritable stranger, the darkly handsome, wealthy, and mysterious merchant, Raefer Montgomery.

Miserable that her seemingly well-laid plan had gone so awry, Catherine is taken by her new husband on a journey to Scotland. On the way, she has many adventures and soon discovers that her husband is not who he purported to be. It turns out that Raefer is really Alexander Cameron, a dashing highlander who had spent many years in exile due to an ancient blood feud gone badly with the Campbell clan. He is now returning home to Castle Achnacarry with Catherine, she a reluctant bride and he a reluctant husband.

Thrust into the Cameron clan, Catherine and Alexander fight the mutual attraction that they have for each other only to succumb to a passion that would seal their fates and dictate the turn of events that would bind them as one. As suddenly as they discover their passion for one another, however, Catherine is rent from Alexander, when the ancient blood feud with the Cambell clan once again rears its ugly head and threatens all that Catherine and Alexander now hold dear.

I found myself compulsively turning the pages of this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am now looking forward to reading the sequel, "The Blood of Roses". Those readers who enjoy historical romances will find much to like in this adventure packed novel that has just the right amount of romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars I need to get my hands on "The Blood of Roses, Sep 11 2007
By Melanie (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
I don't even know where to begin this book was so amazing. I could not put it down, I started reading it Saturday night and finished it Sunday night, barely able to tear myself away to eat during the day.

Marsha Canham has done a brilliant job of combining a great story with history and painting beautiful pictures within her pages. You can't help but love the characters in this story, even though Catherine in her spoiled ways takes some warming up too. Alexander Cameron Is a highlander who wins Catherine in a duel, and is forced to marry her. He uses Catherine to sneak past the English Dragoons, and back into Scotland. Once there the adventure really begins. Even the secondary characters are charming. I'm hopping there will be a bit of a love story between Aluinn and Deirdre, and I want to know what happens to Lauren Cameron, will she be found out? I was so disappointed that I was left hanging at the end to find there is a sequel to conclude this story, but I got over this very quickly when I realized there is a whole other novel waiting out there for me to read... I can't wait.

Once I am done reading the next book "The Blood of Roses" I will be sure to see what else Marsha Canham has written.
