Product Description

From Amazon.com

They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the four girls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not to mention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hips perfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenager can feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact to share them equally, to mail them back and forth over the summer from wherever they are. Beautiful, distant Lena is going to Greece to be with her grandparents; strong, athletic Bridget is off to soccer camp in Baja, California; hot-tempered Carmen plans to have her divorced father all to herself in South Carolina; and Tibby the rebel will be left at home to slave for minimum wage at Wallman's.

Over the summer the Pants come to represent the support of the sisterhood, but they also lead each girl into bruising and ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, dying and forgiveness. Lena finds her identity in Greece and the courage not to reject love; Bridget gets in over her head with an older camp coach; Carmen finds her father ensconced with a new fiancée and family; and Tibby unwillingly takes on a filmmaking apprentice who is dying of leukemia. Each girl's story is distinct and engrossing, told in a brightly contemporary style. Like the Pants, the reader bounces back and forth among the four unfolding adventures, and the melange is spiced with letters and witty quotes. Ann Brashares has here created four captivating characters and seamlessly interwoven their stories for a young adult novel that is fresh and absorbing. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly

First novelist Brashares successfully creates four distinct characters, each with her own story line, and ties them together with a creative device: a pair of pants purchased in a thrift shop. As four lifelong friends prepare to split up for the summer, they discover that the second-hand jeans look good on all of them, despite their different physiques. They promise to rotate the jeans among them and, upon their reunion at summer's end, record their favorite adventures on the pant legs. These magical pants serve as a substitute friend for each girl as she is tested that summer, from Carmen, who goes to visit her father only to find out he's engaged to a woman with two teenage kids, to Tibby, who befriends a precocious 12-year-old cancer victim. Even though they are separated for most of the summer, the friends communicate their love and understanding for one another (Tibby writes to Lena, "Don't torture yourself, Len. We love you too much," to console her friend for mistakenly accusing a cute neighbor boy of spying on her while she skinny dips in Greece). Their bonds, combined with a realistic portrayal of teen emotions (Tibby is embarrassed by the smock she has to wear to work at Wallman's, while Carmen boils with rage when the seamstress fitting her bridesmaid dress disparages her curvy figure), make for an outstanding and vivid book that will stay with readers for a long time. Readers will hope that Brashares chronicles the sisterhood for volumes to come. Ages 12-up. (Sept).

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what you'd expect...EVEN BETTER!!!, Aug 10 2004
By Christina (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
I was really prepared not to like this book. I'd read some of the reviews, and although they were good, I just couldn't bring myself to read a book about travelling pants. It just sounded so out there and stupid and from what I thought so very unentertaining. Boy was I wrong. It was so good. The heroines were diverse and each had amazingly interesting plots. Its a really good read. I definitely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cool book by a really good author!, Jun 21 2006
By A grade 4 student (First Avenue P.S., Ottawa) - See all my reviews
Have you ever got separated from your friends for the whole summer?

Well Lena, Carmen, Tibby and Bridget are separated for the summer in their lives! Lena is very pretty but she does not want to show any of herself. Carmen is sensitive and thinks she is so fat when she is not. Tibby, on the other hand, is cool and a little bit goth; her friends think she is selfish. Now Bridget is really different and special (because her Mom died) but she is very sporty and really good at soccer. One day when the four girls go shopping they find a pair of jeans. The funny thing is the jeans fit all of them (they are all different shapes and sizes). So they all go to the place where their moms became friends. And they decide the pants will travel between the four of them. They also make rules for the pants. Lena is going to Greece to see her grandparents. Carmen is going to visit her dad. Tibby will be staying home. Bridget is going to a really good soccer camp. Lena meets a guy in Greece who is very nice. Carmen meets her dad's new family (which she never knew he had). Tibby meets a girl named Bailey who is very sick right now. Bridget has a good time at her soccer camp, and she also makes a lot of friends. So they all end up having a good summer. Will they stay friends?

I really liked this book! I think Bridget is the coolest. Also Ann Brashares is a really good author because when you write her a letter she will answer all your questions. I should know, she wrote me a letter!
