From Booklist

Running the coastal California spa that has been in her family for three generations has left Annie O'Toole with little time for a love life, except for a brief affair with a mysterious man who left for Mexico on his yacht. The next time she sees Sam McKade, he's on television, a hero who rescued children from a speeding bus that slammed into a cement barrier. Broken, bleeding, and suffering from amnesia, Sam, actually a Navy SEAL, is sent to Annie's spa for rehabilitation in the hope that he'll regain his lost memories that are essential to national security. Devastated that he doesn't even recognize her, workaholic Annie does her best to restore Sam to health while keeping him hidden and safe from whoever it is that wants him dead. Sam is a perfect adventure-hero romantic lead, the incredibly fit and smart Annie is his perfect match, and Izzy Tegue, a Denzel Washington clone, is also on the scene, providing much-needed security. Product Description

Annie O’Toole has a past....

The last time Annie saw Sam, they were lying in each other’s arms beneath a canopy of stars. Now Annie paces a secluded airfield at midnight, awaiting the arrival of an unmarked Navy helicopter. Her assignment: Get this Navy SEAL back into fighting form pronto–and keep his identity a secret. But who’s going to protect her from a man who looks at her as if she were a stranger and who doesn’t remember the one night she’ll never forget?

His name is Sam McKade.

Six foot four inches of tough, trained professional, Sam risked his life in an act of rare courage, saving a busload of schoolchildren from certain death. But becoming America’s newest media hero can be dangerous for a man with an undercover past. Sam could do a lot worse than this secluded beach resort. Ditto the sexy therapist who seems maddeningly familiar–if he only knew where or when. But he’s about to find out–as a dangerous enemy surfaces out of his shadowed past, leaving a trail of bodies right to Annie’s door.

Now the rugged SEAL who doesn’t believe in love or commitment is about to risk everything...because for Sam McKade, protecting this woman, this extraordinary woman, has become the most important mission of his life....

3.0 out of 5 stars an entertaining read that could've been better, Oct 15 2003
By Kenzie L. Jardina "book sniffer" (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been a fan of Ms. Skye since I picked up her "The Black Rose" soon after it came out. I have followed her books ever since, taking a break during the flood of Draycott Abbey books. I enjoy her historicals more, but thought several in this series of contemporaries were well written.

My Spy is another of the Navy SEAL partnered with a civilian stories, and although the premise is a bit far fetched we all know that with most romance novels one has to be very good at accepting the unacceptable. There isn't anything in the plot that will stretch your belief to the snapping point, but a few scenes get very close to that edge.

It annoyed me that Annie took so long to get over herself at the end and throw caution to the wind in favor of love. She is resistant to the point of detracting from the story.

There were also several gaping holes in the story that pricked at me. Even for a superbly fit man like Sam, his recovery is nothing short of miraculous. I think it would have played better for the timeline to be stretched a bit more, rather than have everything happen within 3 weeks. You almost have to throw out Ms. Skye's timeline and imagine your own for the story to make sense.

I think Ms. Skye can do much better than this. From another author, this might be a 4 star book, but with her past library to compare against, "My Spy" only rates a 3. But the story is good enough to provide an afternoon's diversion.
