Product Description

From Amazon.com

Scott O'Dell won the Newbery Medal for Island of the Blue Dolphins in 1961, and in 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this riveting story one of the 10 best American children's books of the past 200 years. O'Dell was inspired by the real-life story of a 12-year-old American Indian girl, Karana. The author based his book on the life of this remarkable young woman who, during the evacuation of Ghalas-at (an island off the coast of California), jumped ship to stay with her young brother who had been abandoned on the island. He died shortly thereafter, and Karana fended for herself on the island for 18 years.

O'Dell tells the miraculous story of how Karana forages on land and in the ocean, clothes herself (in a green-cormorant skirt and an otter cape on special occasions), and secures shelter. Perhaps even more startlingly, she finds strength and serenity living alone on the island. This beautiful edition of Island of the Blue Dolphins is enriched with 12 full-page watercolor paintings by Ted Lewin, illustrator of more than 100 children's books, including Ali, Child of the Desert. A gripping story of battling wild dogs and sea elephants, this simply told, suspenseful tale of survival is also an uplifting adventure of the spirit. (Ages 9 to 12) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From AudioFile

Narrator Tantoo Cardinal more than succeeds in delivering a lovely listening experience. Her accent and pronunciation are first rate. The music adds to the story with an ethnic sound. When the Russians invaded the island, many islanders were killed or fled. Some, like the young girl, Karana, were accidentally left behind. Karana's survival in remote isolation is moving and unforgettable. Both the text and Cardinal's style make the listener feel he's part of Karana's isolation and maturation. S.G.B. 4.0 out of 5 stars mmeeh., Jun 3 2007
By kaydie (san diego, california) - See all my reviews
why do other people think the book is so 'dull' ? the book is just paying really close to detail because it was written very nicely, which is why most parts of it are very long. .like when she was in the canoe and it was leaking etc. it's still a very good book, it's so sad and wonderful. our teacher told us that this book was based off real experiences, that a girl realllly did survive 18 years on an island by herself. that's what makes it so interesting! some may have not known this, so with this in mind, read the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, April 29 2006
By ,Heather (Canada) - See all my reviews
I read this book in grade school over ten years ago, and to this day, I cherish it. The assignment was "Survival" and Island is the perfect portrayal. Having to keep positive and refusing to give in. This novel is good for any reader, young and mature alike. An easy read, but well worth the inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars the book which got many -many prizes, Oct 4 2005
By Elena (Russia, Moscow) - See all my reviews
I like this novel very much. I must say that this book was a "winner" of the most famous awards in children literature and got Andersen' gold medal. This book also has Newbery Medal, Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. This book was translated into many languages and was published in many counties, in cultures as different as Iran and Israel, Brazil and Bulgaria, China and Czechoslovakia.
This book is good for 10-14 y.o., an exciting story with lots of adventures.
This story based on the true event, when the young girl was left upon an island near the coast of Southern California. She lived there alone for 18 years.
Author also writes The King's Fifth , Sing down the moon and etc.
