Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

John W. Campbell award-winner Feintuch's long-awaited sequel to The Still (1997) starts slowly but gathers speed as his impatient hero, King Rodrigo of Caledon, must deal with both his enemies and his own vicious temper, which can complicate his relations with allies and friends. After learning to use the ancient power of the Still (derived from gazing into still water) to gain access to the wisdom of past rulers, Rodrigo wields the Still as a weapon in one exciting, intricately described battle after another as his armies take on the invading Hriskil, who wield the Rood. Treachery costs Rodrigo the life of his beloved mentor, Rustin, and nearly that of his remaining brother, Elryc. Elaborate and at times highly graphic, from violent fighting to the painful growth of Rodrigo's character, the tale winds its way through several plot twists...

From Library Journal

When the death of his mother brought the boy Rodrigo to the throne of Caledon, he also inherited the power of the Still, a magic that enables him to touch the minds of his ancestors and benefit from their wisdom. As the kingdom of Caledon faces war from enemies to the north and treachery from those who do not accept his rulership, Rodrigo must learn to take up the reins of leadership while curbing his own instincts for cruelty and impulsiveness. Feintuch's sequel to The Still explores the fate of a young man come too soon to power and the sacrifices he must make for the good of the realm. For large fantasy collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars At times joyous, at times it brings you to tears, April 26 2003
This review is from: King (Paperback)
I'm a man and this story simply brought tears out of my eyes at many times during the book, and the ending was incredibly moving and brought me to tears on and off for minutes. i dont cry often. this book is simply that good. however, if you want to read this, it's imperitive that you first read The Still (by the same author).

4.0 out of 5 stars Hail "The King", Jan 9 2003
By A Customer
Just a few days ago I read "The King" and I was amazed. While a little bored by the constant battles (being that I'm not a military mind), the rest of the book was really intense. It was a lot more emotional than "The Still"; at times I was near tears. While a little disatisfied with the ending (I would have like to see Roddy and Rustin pair up, but that's not possible ^-^), I was pleased overall. "The King" is a wonderful addition to the Rodrigo of Caledon saga, and I hope that David Feintuch finds it in himself to bless us readers and write another!

5.0 out of 5 stars Weaves the tale of a new prince barely in control, Sep 8 2002
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
The King continues the ongoing saga of a young prince, who survived treachery to claim his throne and who here must continue to prove himself in order to keep it. This fantasy requires no prior familiarity with its predecessor in order to prove satisfying as it weaves the tale of a new prince barely in control of his forces.
