4.0 out of 5 stars A Book with Bite that Won't Let Go, Dec 13 2008
By Stephanie Bakker (Ontario, CANADA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Kate Daniels has found herself in a precarious situation. She is a magical gun for hire in a world where magic is unpredictable. To find the killer of her guardian she must work with an organization she openly distrusts. And, at the heart of her investigation, she discovers someone is trying to start a war between the Pack, the shapeshifter society of the south, and the People, necromancers who control mindless vampires.

Kate must find a way to sort through the mess while keeping herself alive if she wants to find the killer. But once the killer is found, she is willing to risk everything, including her own life, to stop them.

Magic Bites is the first novel in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. It brings the reader into a creative new world full of danger and deception. But even more promising, is the dynamic heroine who rebels against clichés, is complex but not overwhelming, and who will risk everything for what is right. Magic Bites is an absorbing read in the captivating arena of urban fantasy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on an increasingly crowded genre, Dec 13 2007
By Rasmub (Edmonton AB Canada) - See all my reviews
I'm not much of a reviewer -- so please just buy the book! This went instantly into my 'keep' pile -- just go to the author's webpage for an excerpt (which is what caught me) and some short stories (free to read).

It is a very complex world where everything isn't just black/white just a range of greys. Andrews brings up complex questions about how things would actually work if one day we woke up and all our accustomed electronics only worked on an intermittant basis (either you have magic or you have electricity -- they don't mix well) and yahoos now have the ability to summon creatures to act out poorly thought out master plans. :)

Don't get me wrong -- there are true bad guys in a complex plot -- but it is interesting when a man burning down part of the city (after summoning a salamader then loosing his mind to it) is just a minor aside to explain how our heroine pays the rent. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great series with an excellent heroine, Jan 18 2010
By Linda Boden (Toronto, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am fond of this genre - urban fantasy - but have found so many terrible books that I would like to give it all up. Ilona Andrews' novels are the only thing that keep me going! Kate Daniels, the heroine of this series, is hilarious: spunky, proud, rash, and very aware of her own faults. I really enjoy her character as someone I can be amused by and also relate to. I cannot count how many urban fantasy novels which feature a near perfect woman (often a redhead) who goes about fighting evil in insipid plots while she wears high heels and gets all swoony over some hot vampire/werewolf/whatever. Kate is so refreshing. I also quite enjoy the world the books are set in.

I just can't recommend these books enough to anyone who enjoys the fantasy or urban fantasy genre. Thus far I've recommended these books to three of my friends, and all of them adore them. So if you're even vaguely considering you might enjoy these books, just do it! Odds are pretty high you will.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anita Blake with more originality and less spooge.
Did you like Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake at first, but then grow less enthused with later novels? Then this series fills that void. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Dont't think, just buy
The heroine Kate Daniels is,in my humble opinion, the best character out in a very long time. This series is my absolute favourite. Read more
