I have not read these two books (The Glass Teat, and of course The Other Glass Teat -- they always travel in pairs) in some years, but I think it is time to pull them out and read 'em both again. What I remember about them both (I guess I'll refer to it as one book, it is a collection of columns) is the way it is useful reading in more ways than one. It is a collection of reviews of TV shows. So it can be read as simply that, esp. by those old enough to remember these shows. But by now, it is all ancient history in terms of TV, because most or all of this is from around roughly 1970 or before. Pardon my inaccuracy. Which means that it is also a sort of time capsule of how things were then, because not every single word of it is about TV, other things are mentioned, for example when Ellison mentions having one of the first waterbeds. In fact it can also be read as a big joke, because of the often-dated language and swingin' lingo of the time. And for fans of Ellison's fictional writings, it can be seen as a source of insight into his thought processes, which never seem to slow down much.

I am looking forward to reading these again, because they are enjoyable on so many levels simultaneously. Also, collections like this this are great for keeping on you in case you have to wait somewhere, the pieces are sort of bite-size and you can pick it up in the middle and read whatever you want: they do not need to be read chronologically.
