Product Description

From Amazon.com

Cobb Anderson created the "boppers," sentient robots that overthrew their human overlords. But now Cobb is just an aging alcoholic waiting to die, and the big boppers are threatening to absorb all of the little boppers--and eventually every human--into a giant, melded consciousness. Some of the little boppers aren't too keen on the idea, and a full-scale robot revolt is underway on the moon (where the boppers live). Meanwhile, bopper Ralph Numbers wants to give Cobb immortality by letting a big bopper slice up his brain and tape his "software." It seems like a good idea to Cobb. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A light, enjoyable read., April 12 2000
By Me (Earth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Software (Paperback)
Fans of the cyberpunk style of sci-fi should find this an entertaining read. Not a heavyweight such as Gibson's Neuromancer (my basic unit of cyberpunk measurement), it nonetheless strikes a similar chord along the lines of Gibson's Chiba City.

You can deduce my opinion of the book in that there are three books that I'm aware of in this series... and I liked Rucker's Software enough that I will buy the other two.

On a side note, it's a short read... almost a novella.

All Hail Happy Cloak! A wild and joyous romp from the get-go. Unique in that it moves so well from comedy to ideas to action and into supercool character developement. Lots of weird events and images. Superb SF entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cyberpunk
Wonderful book, a must read for cyberpunk fans (along with wetware and freeware). He takes you to the brink of total chaos but manages to hold it all together.

1.0 out of 5 stars Over-Hyped bubblegum for the brain
The book has been way over-hyped. It was readable but nothing like you would expect something that has been labeled cyberpunk to be. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
A good book with a interesting concept. There are no clear cut villians and it makes you wonder what side you'd be on. A recommended short quick read.

2.0 out of 5 stars It was... Ok?
I couldn't tell if I liked the book while I was reading it, so I decided to finish it. I'm still not sure. I think the only reason I liked it at all, was because I wanted to. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe it was the buildup?
Maybe the rave reviews I heard made me expect too much, but the actual book was kind of a let-down. It just didn't, I don't know, _romp_. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing book. William Gibson who?
This novel... which, sure, clocks in under 180 pages, but is that necessarily a bad thing? ... is the most inventive thing I've read since Philip Dick and Alfred Bester. Read more
