Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Peters's romantic thriller, in which the indomitable Victorian archeologist Amelia Peabody searches for Nefertiti's tomb, offers surefire entertainment.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Each addition to the deservedly popular Amelia Peabody series displays new facets of Peters's rich talent and whets the appetite for more. This archaeological season, Amelia and husband Emerson leave unruly son Ramses in England with beautiful ward Nefret ( The Last Camel Died at Noon , Warner, 1991). Amelia anticipates time alone with Emerson, but the Master Criminal devises otherwise: In his quest for directions to the fabulous Lost Oasis, he attempts abduction, subterfuge, and espionage. High adventure, narrated in Amelia's witty, inimitably resplendent style. Peabody fans will rejoice. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/92; for an interview with Elizabeth Peters, see "The Three Faces of Mertz/Peters/Michaels," p. 128.--Ed.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best So Far, Jun 23 2004
By A Customer
This is a thoroughly enjoyable Amelia Peabody--the first one I simply could not put down until I finished. I found Ramses's letters utterly hilarious. ("I have three pounds 11 shillings.") At first I thought Amelia was annoying with her "7-Year Itch" but it was turned round on her in a touching way. There is a great surprise ending (though I was not surprised!). This one is really funny. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, Feb 4 2004
By A Customer
I have enjoyed all of the Amelia Peabody stories, but this is the first one that made me think I would want to read it again.
Emerson has lost his memory, and it was fun to watch him get to know Amelia again. Then, there was a twist at the end that made me go "what!" I never saw it coming!

3.0 out of 5 stars Lost in Amarna, Nov 16 2003
By "murrayj51" (Baton Rouge, LA United States) - See all my reviews
I love Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries! While I enjoyed this book, I believe it would have been a difficult choice had I not read the preceding books in the series. Amelia and Emerson return to the archeological site where they met, however things are more dangerous than ever and the Emersons are constantly in peril.
One of the stranger plot twists is Emerson's amnesia and sudden recovery. During his amnesia Amelia's character exhibits emotional depths that are touching but very removed from her general pragmatism.
This book was okay, but not my favorite in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Okay I'm addicted!
The first couple in the series were hard to read. She writes very formally. British style. But I must admit, the characters are addicting! I can't wait to read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Snake, the Crocodile, and the REALLY good book.
At first I could barely keep my eyes open as I read. I put off reading it for days and days! I figured that since Rameses wasn't in it a lot it couldn't be very exciting. Read more
