From Publishers Weekly

More often than not, a person missing as a result of foul play will be killed if not rescued in the first 48 hours after the abduction. This actuarial statistic is taken as gospel by struggling lawyer Tom Redmond in Green's sloppy third thriller (after The Fifth Angel) when Redmond's Washington Post reporter daughter, Jane, disappears. Before she vanished, Jane was investigating the purported sexual misconduct of powerful Senator Gleason, who years ago destroyed her father's career as a district attorney. Now Tom believes the senator has hired a former CIA assassin to do away with Jane. Enlisting the help of former biker Mike Tubbs, Tom sets off on a 48-hour rampage of criminal trespass, kidnapping, assault, grand theft, burglary, torture and murder, racing up and down the east coast with the duct tape–wrapped senator in tow. Meanwhile, Jane makes her own escape, running half-naked around a Hudson River island, fighting snakes and psychopaths. Just as she thinks all is lost, she meets up with Mark Allen, a handsome mystery man who was one of her key sources on the Gleason story. Mark seems to be on her side—but who is he, really? After the 48 hours elapse, the action extends to the evil plan of a Ukrainian terrorist who talks like Speedy Gonzalez, and Jane's vigilantes commit a few more felonies to save the day. Improbabilities vie for attention with contrivances, and the novel is riddled with careless writing ("Mike began typing again, his stubby fingers running the keys like a prodigy"), silly dialogue (" 'This is GD big' ") and irrelevant detail ("Tom paid at the Home Depot with cash"). As things wind down to a predictable ending, Redmond's 48 hours may seem interminable.

From AudioFile

Police operate on the theory that if a kidnapped victim isn't found within the first 48 hours, the chances of turning up alive are slim. Jane Redmon is a WASHINGTON POST reporter who is receiving damning information about a prominent United States senator. When she's kidnapped, under the orders of the senator, her father, retired cop Tom Redmon, and his former partner, Mike Tubbs, begin a desperate search to find her within the 48-hour timeframe. Stephen Lang does an excellent job maintaining suspense. His narration adds greatly to the enjoyment of this thriller. 1.0étoiles sur 5 Generic Thriller, Juil 18 2004
Par Un client
Having read and enjoyed a couple of Tim Green's other books, I picked this one up hoping for more of the same. But this is strictly a by the numbers mystery with boring characters and a lousy plot. The Publishers Weekly and Booklist reviews hit it on the head. Green's earlier work, like "The Fourth Perimeter" is much better.

4.0étoiles sur 5 GOOD PLOT. PLENTY OF ACTION., Jui 4 2004
This review is from: The First 48 (Audio CD)
Green's latest thriller begins with Tom Redmond, a poor lawyer, promising to sue some large conglomerates for a poor family with an ill child. His secretary wants him to take a case that pays. Later, Tom and his friend, Mike, meet up. Mike is a special kind of friend, one willing to go the extra, unusual yard. He is also one to set up Tom in a humorous situation, just because he can. Even under stress, Tom can forgive Mike for his tricks, which signifies their special friendship. This is the kind of friendship Tom needs when life gets dangerous. The camaraderie of these two keeps the story moving once the action begins.

The other person in Tom's life is his daughter, Jane. Jane is a Washington, DC, journalist. She uncovers a story about a corrupt senator, the very senator who destroyed her father's career years ago. Jane's investigative skills put her in harm's way, and lucky for her -- though not for others -- her Dad is willing to do what's necessary to find and save his daughter's life. Jane is one tough lady and adds a lot to the storyline.

Who else is in Tom's life? His late wife. Tom still sees her and heeds her advice.

_The First 48_ doesn't have the intensity of Green's earlier novel, _The Fifth Angel_, but it does have a suspenseful plot, blow-by-blow scenes and interesting twists. Green gives his readers a world of reality with some added embellishments -- perfect for the reader looking for an engaging thriller.

Actor Stephen Lang reads _The First 48_. Lang's uses his voice well in portraying the typical emotional range, and when Lang's tone drops an octave, he invokes shades of the more sinister, from ornery to bone chilling.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Tremendously Average, Avril 6 2004
Par hartf (New York) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This is my first Tim Green book and I'd have to say that I was not very impressed. The premise of the book intrigued me so I sprung for the $25. Being a fan of Patterson, Grisham, Baldacci, et all, the story here was very light in development and detail. As a father looks for his kidnapped daughter, the first 48 hours of her disappearance are counted down. The premise here is that when someone is missing for over 48 hours that it isn't very likely that they'll be found. After a very short while I found the constant referrals to how much time was left on the clock extremely annoying. In all I figure that 2 of the 48 hours were wasted just talking about how much time was left. I felt the countdown didn't really add any suspense at all in fact. On the good side, the book is a fairly quick read so the pain is somewhat short lived.
