From Kirkus Reviews

Military sword and sorcery, from the co-author of Kingdoms of the Night (with Allan Cole, 1995, etc.) The former kingdom of Numantia is governed by an effete oligarchy known as the Rule of Ten. As a young, untried cavalry officer, narrator Damastes is sent with his troop to escort a diplomatic mission led by the seer (magician) Tenedos into a bandit-infested border country of Kait. But opposed by Kait's greedy boss--Baber Fergana and his sorcerer, Irshad, not to mention by a powerful demon called Thak and his strangler-assassin Tovieti cult--Tenedos and Damastes barely escape with a handful of survivors. Soon, however, Thak moves into the Numantian capital, Nicias, followed rapidly by the Tovieti with their yellow silk strangling cords, while another enemy, the sorcerer Chardin Sher, brews up spells more powerful than those of Tenedos. Despite all this, the Rule of Ten refuse to take action, and Nicias is engulfed by civil war. Tenedos and Damastes have no choice but to seize control of Numantia, then face further military and sorcerous challenges before Tenedos openly declares himself emperor. A fantasy sex- and violence-fest, courtesy of Bunch's sure grasp of military history and organization, gory battles interspersed with interludes of graphic sex, and dialogue peppered with incongruous modern expletives. The text, while complete in itself, seems to promise at least one sequel. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. --Ce texte provient de la Paperback édition.

Product Description

Hotheaded young cavalry officer Damastes and the radical wizard Tenedos were expected to die in a mountain ambush. But their enemies underestimated the amazing power of the seer and the bravery of the soldier. As this unlikely team begins to outwit usurpers and necromancers, word spreads that theirs is a path of destiny. Military adventure, magic, and romance mix in this exciting fantasy adventure.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Very little happens, sex is used as filler material., Oct. 25 2004
This book was very dissapointing. The concept is good, but apart from brief spurts of action, the book is actually one long philosophical/political debate highlighted by scenes of graphic sex. While I don't have a problem with this per se, it adds nothing to the novel (unless you want to read erotica, but hide the fact that you are doing so), and in fact the reader is left with the impression that these scenes are thrown in because the author was at a loss on how to make his written page quota.

The book further suffers from being written in 1st-person perspective (i.e., I quickly looked out the window before I went downstairs to have breakfast.) which I personally find difficult to read at the best of times anyway. The characters, although talked about ad nauseum, actually see very little development throughout the course of the book, with the side characters mere shadows that are around to fill whitespace.

With the number of fine fantasy series currently available, this is one to avoid. It is not the worst thing I ever read, but it is mediocre fare at best.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Content didn't bother me, bad story and writing did, Nov. 14 2003
Par Un client
First off, sex in books doesn't bother me, neither does language or blood and gore and other gruesome acts of violence. As long as the content of said acts is applicable to the storyline in the book and furthers the story, I am all for it.

But the violence in the first two books of the series is written weakly and there are pages upon pages upon pages in these books devoted toward pointless sex. I mean, get as graphic as you want but do it in a page or two and get on with the story. And don't keep throwing it in there every five pages. This series was very poorly written and I do not recommend it at all. The "hero" Damastes is one of the worst "good guys" ever. Not because he isn't that "good" but because his character is so boring and dim-witted.

In all fairness to the author, I didn't read the third book so I can't say if the series had a wonderful ending. But unfortunatly I bought all three at the same time and wasted every penny of it.

If you have a thing for badly written soft porn and horribly written action sequences, get this series. Otherwise, check out a fantasy series from a more talented author, like George R. R. Martin, J. R. R. Tolkien, Feist, Weiss, J. V. Jones, Kearney, Marco, or any other well received writer. This series stunk.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Hey Reviewers! You say..., Mars 4 2002
Par Un client
Flawed but made up with it's intensity. I read this two years ago and have yet to find a book with the same great combo of sword, sorcery, passion and yes, sex scenes. Hey if I am going to fantasize about swordsmanship and battles, I may as well have the fantasy sex along for the ride as well. Bunch scores big in my book. My only complaint is that his next two books fall short maybe due to my "high" expectations. If you are a guy that can enjoy Maxim magazine for a few laughs without apology, but also have rudimentary reading skills (that eliminates 50% of their subscribers), you'll enjoy this book.

This book seems very similar to the Anteros trilogy, with both series having a character telling the story in the first person mode and are betrayed by a magic-user. Read more

5.0étoiles sur 5 good stuff
I think this book was very good. Yes it had many sex scenes but Bunch was only trying to build on Damastes character. The battles were good and the bad guys bad. Read more
