From Booklist

In her latest historical romance, Busbee re-creates New Orleans at the time of the Louisiana Purchase. Willful Micaela Dupree, a young Creole raised to despise the boorish Ame ricains, is incensed to learn Hugh Lancaster is moving to New Orleans to oversee his interest in the business co-owned with her family. Hugh relishes Micaela's barbed comments until he overhears a conversation leading him to believe she is out to trap him into marriage to protect her family. Stunned by his sudden coldness, Micaela believes Hugh has been toying with her to embarrass her family. An accident forces the two to seek shelter and leads to the compromising situation each tried to avoid. As initial mistrust leads to a rocky beginning for a marriage and Hugh uncovers a plot to murder him, the lovers must decide what is worth more: their future or their pride. Melanie Duncan

5.0 out of 5 stars THOROUGHLY SATISFYING & DELIGHTFUL READ, Jun 10 1999
By A Customer
Ms. Busbee really knows her stuff when it comes to telling an engrossing tale.

Chock full of plot, details & romance!

I read this book both from a reader & an author's point of view. Every time I would think to myself, if I were writing this I'd have such & such happen--Ms. Busbee would follow thru on my hopes.

No disappointments in this book.

Set in Historical New Orleans, shortly after the Louisiana purchase, the people behave as they would in those times.

The story centers around Micaela Dupree a beautiful French Cerole and Hugh Lancaster a handsome American.

The Dupree family is quite put out when Hugh Lancaster is granted shares in the company the Dupree & Lancaster family jointly own, and discover Hugh is going to move to New Orleans.

The company has been losing business and Hugh is determined to uncover the reason why.

Plots abound amoung the Dupree men and their friends. Micaela's honor & reputation are compromised, a duel is fought, and lovers' secrets are revealed all in timely fashion.

Micaela Dupree makes a marvelous, spirited heroine, as smart as she is sassy, and Hugh is a very likeable hero.

I especially liked Hugh's tenderness and concern as well as his passionate feelings of love for Micaela.

The erotically romantic scenes between Hugh & Micaela are especially well written.
