Product Description

From Amazon.com

Nelson DeMille's narrative engine is one of the best in the business, and it chugs away in grand style in this story of buried treasure and biological warfare on a tiny spit of land off Long Island. As told by a wry, wounded New York City detective who is drafted to explore a couple of murders, Plum Island is a rich pudding of flavorful (if familiar) ingredients, including a ferocious storm at sea. Other DeMille epics in paperback include By the Rivers of Babylon, The General's Daughter, The Gold Coast, Spencerville, and Word of Honor. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

While investigating the murder of a young Long Island couple, an NYPD detective is stunned to find that they may have been involved in dealing genetically altered viruses. A 500,000-copy first printing.

5.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY TERRIFIC!..., Feb 3 2009
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This book was my first introduction to this author, and now I cannot wait to read each and everyone of his books! In this book, the author introduces NYPD homicide detective John Corey, who, having been seriously wounded in the line of duty, is convalescing at his uncle's home on Long Island's North Forth. When the local Police Chief asks for his assistance in the double homicide of two of Corey's friends, biologists who worked on Plum Island where a top secret government research facility exists, Corey begins an adventure of a lifetime.

Well-researched, this book is replete with interesting historical information about Long Island's North Fork, which is the heart of its wine country. The author weaves a compelling narrative filled with many twists and turns that will definitely keep the reader compulsively turning the pages of this well-written book. It is an exciting, intricately plotted thriller with fully fleshed characters and snappy dialogue. The main character, John Corey, is a tough talking, wise-cracking hero, with nerves of steel. An alpha male who takes no prisoners, Corey is an interesting and likable character, and one that the reader hopes will appear in another of the author's novels. I was thrilled to discover that this character appears in a number of subsequent novels by this author.

Those who enjoy mysteries, police procedurals, and thrillers will simply love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars keeps you guessing!, July 5 2004
By Vahania63 (Michigan United States) - See all my reviews
This is my first book by Nelson DeMille and what a pleasant surprise it was. This is one of the best examples of great mistery novels. It has everything: great suspense, good character development, main character NYC detective John Corey is very likable and could be easily identified with, a lot of humor, etc. It's also quite informative on the some subjects that are related to the plot. If anything, I was a little surprised to read some other reviews saying that the first part of the book was a little boring and the last two pages is where the most action takes place. I actually found first part to be the most suspenful and thought that whole sea adventures didn't need to be covered in so many pages. Still, great mistery novel that is highly recommended to all mistery fans. I am looking forward to other books by this writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read
This was fun. The main character (John Corey) is an over-confident wise-guy detective who thinks he's God's gift to women. His arrogance is funny. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Good murder mystery
Ok, I have to sound sexist here, but I don't mean too. I enjoy DeMille's works a lot more than I do the several mystery books I've reviewed by women authors. Read more

DeMille is the best suspense writer out there. I read very little fiction because it doesn't hold my interest, but his books will keep you guessing until the end. Read more
