Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Like Green's previous thriller, The Fourth Perimeter, this book opens with an engaging premise that becomes less credible as the novel unfolds. Jack Ruskin, a senior partner in a prominent New York law firm, is beside himself with rage; his 15-year-old daughter is semicatatonic after being raped by a repeat sex offender, and the criminal has gotten off with a minimal sentence. Jack decides to take the law into his own hands. He hunts down and kills a randomly selected sex offender in upstate New York. Driven by bloodlust, Jack then embarks on a series of similar vigilante executions as he travels around the country on business for the firm. He falls in love with Beth, an empathetic young counselor at his daughter's hospital, but there's a close call when Beth nearly catches him surfing the Web for likely victims. He offs another criminal while the he and Beth are on an idyllic getaway in the Adirondacks. As the bodies pile up, FBI agent Amanda Lee is assigned to track down Jack. Amanda has her own interest in the case-her partner was recently killed by a child abuser resisting arrest. The briskly paced thriller culminates in a revealing showdown when Amanda traps Jack on Long Island. The action is engaging, but between the lurid goings-on and the lurid prose ("His little girl was a shell with scars on her body and holes punched in her veins to feed her drugs"), the story verges on bad pulp. Fans of Green's earlier novels will be satisfied with this one, but some may wish he had brought a bit more craft and restraint to his compelling premise.

1.0 out of 5 stars Move on, Mar 24 2004
By Figgie "teej414" (Williston Park, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This book was one of the worst thrillers I have ever read and I've read too many to mention. The beginning was somewhat compelling but as it went on it became almost laughable. To believe that anything that happened in the last 100 pages could actually occur in real life is so comical, it's not even funny. Each scene became more unbelievable. It was a Page Turner though.
I couldn't wait to turn those last pages so it would end my suffering.

1.0 out of 5 stars Superficial nonsense, no depth, no suspense, Mar 10 2004
By "crab410" (Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
Thank GOD that I checked this out at the local library, rather than bought it...
The characters are cardboard cutouts, the suspense was nonexistent, there is NO moral dilemma, the main character seems to exist in a relationship vacuum (no parents, no siblings, no significant relationships other than the unseen ex-wife and new - albeit generic - girlfriend?). The "hook" - that he decides to kill molesters - is interesting, but the plot execution (sorry) is patently absurd. These predatory people are cunning survivors, not just the hulking stereotypical monsters portrayed here. The relative ease with which he - a lawyer apparently untrained in firearms - dispatches these scum is painfully comical.
In short, reading this book was a waste of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars An effective and highly recommended thriller, Mar 2 2004
By Larry Gandle (Tampa, Florida) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Fifth Angel (Hardcover)
Attorney Jack Ruskin is torn by the anguish that his daughter was sexually assaulted by a child molester. His daughter is now institutionalized and his wife has left him. His previous life is shattered. As a means of revenge, he has become a vigilante killing child predators throughout the country. On his tail are highly accomplished FBI agents trying to stop Jack from taking the law into his own hands any further.
Tim Green has written a highly suspenseful thought provoking tale as to what truly constitutes evil. Is Jack Ruskin a criminal? The reader would tend to side with the opinion that he is in fact a hero. His victims are shadowy figures with little room for sympathy as depicted by the author. The pacing becomes relentless as we follow Jack on his quest for revenge and, incidentally, in his attempt to turn his life around. Effective simple and direct episodes are used in conveying this effective and highly recommended thriller. I would definitely seek out this author's other work.
