Many, many years ago. I received this book when I was 11 or so and read it and read it and read it. I loved it. When I was 17 or so (I still loved it then), I loaned it to a friend of mine and never got it back. That was 16 years ago. To this day (I am 33), I never forgot the name of it, never forgot the story, but reading all the reviews now, as I am older, I never realized the date, or why Kate was where she was. I want my book back! It was so good.

I was skeptical about getting the book at first. I am interesting in Tuodor England, but Fairy Folk? Well, I finally got it, and it's a great book. I've always loved historical fiction, but now I'm getting into fantasy. It has romance, action, magic, mystery, and includes everyone's favorite holiday, Halloween.

I had never heard the ballad of Tam Lin before, and thank goodness, Kate (main character) hadn't heard it all either. Together we learned how it went, figuring the ballad out by tiny pieces we've heard. This story was amazingly written, I like the characters overall, although I think I could've learned more about Christopher; he was always sort of dark and luminous, like a thunderhead: You knew who he was, that he was there, and you knew a little about him, but it felt as though something was being held back...like the rain in a thunderhead.

I do reccommend this novel to anyone who likes fantasy, history, or old folk ballads reborn. This a beautiful piece of work.

You don't have to be familiar with the "Tam Lin" fairy tale (on which the Perilous Gard is based) to love this book. Read more

I loved this book! I would give it a hundred stars!
However, not everyone likes it.
