Product Description

From Library Journal

When reclusive, haunted Anatole St. Leger bows to fate and commands that the Bride Finder make him a match, he expects only a marriage of convenience, not a passionate love. But he reckons without the powers of the title character, his future wife's determination, or the family ghost. Beautifully vivid descriptions, captivating characters, and a magical plot with a few unexpected twists will not disappoint readers as this classic Beauty and the Beast legend takes on new, occasionally darker, dimensions. A first rate story of courage, acceptance, and the healing power of love by the author of Parker and the Gypsy (Silhouette, 1997).

From Kirkus Reviews

A yeomanlike romance, with a heavy emphasis on the uncanny. Anatole St. Leger, a wild 18th-century hero complete with long, dark hair and the prerequisite scar across his forehead, has a lot more going for him than just his black clothing and his rough and ravishing ways. Anatole has supernatural powers: He is clairvoyant; he can move objects with the power of his mind; he knows when visitors are approaching his home and who they are; and he can unlace the heroine's corset without laying a rough and ravishing finger on her. Even the scar on his face is the result of his ``terrible'' St. Leger gift. Apparently Anatole's mother wasn't comfortable with the more magical St. Leger family talents; when little Anatole shyly levitated a bouquet of flowers in her direction, she panicked and threw a vase at him. Poor Anatole was brought up loveless and alone, hating his aptitude for sorcery. In order to bring some warmth to his crenellated castle (complete with ghost), Anatole summons the Bride Finder (the Reverend Septimus Fitzleger), and asks him to find a hearty, large-bosomed wife and bring her home to Cornwall. (Apparently, St. Leger men whose brides are not chosen by the Bride Finder are cursed.) Instead, Fitzleger brings tiny, fairylike Madeline Breton. Madeline is sensible, forthright, and outspoken; she doesn't believe in ghosts, and much of Anatole's time is spent keeping the truth from her. He is also distressed by his inability to elicit from Madeline the famous ``grand passion'' that St. Leger wives are supposed to feel for their husbands. (St. Legers pledge themselves to their mates not only until death but also through eternity.) The castle ghost, Prospero, a Medieval ladies' man, advises his descendant to love her``simply love her.'' There's also a mystery involving the St. Legers' archenemies, the Mortmains, but it's clunky, poorly conceived, and less interesting than the bedroom prestidigitation. Unsurprising but satisfying. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but there needs to be a bit more care in the details, Jul 5 2004
By RowliRowl "RowliRowl" (Adelaide, Australia) - See all my reviews
The story was good. Some romance these days seem to be more erotica than romance. This is definately romance. But there were a few things that don't gel, that disturb the involvement of the story.

For instance, Anatole does not know what to do in the bedroom. But wey-hey! suddenly third time lucky, and he has just magically gained skills overnight (because he realises he loves her). This doesn't gel with me.

The other really annoying thing was the pages-long attempt to gain sympathy on part of the reader. I have no problem with this usually, except I felt that this attempt went overboard. We already had sympathy for Anatole, I didn't feel it was necessary to try to get us to cry over it(similar to a news program attempt over a terminally ill cancer patient). I'm not saying the situation isn't sad. It definately is. But just don't belabor the point!

Now that I really think about it, I can also come up with other things that just don't sit right (eg. suddenly it's as if Madeline's family is not important, even though Anatole is now a member of it).

BUT it's still a great romance! Just ignore the lack of precision with details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will leave you sighing from its romantic perfection!, Jun 1 2004
By Gayle Greene (Henderson, NV) - See all my reviews
Oh my goodness. I don't know how I missed reading this book when it first came out but I was sure sorry I had! This book is just breath-takingly romantic. The paranormal aspect is wonderful, creating a hero who will steal your heart. Anatole is tortured and aloof, not wanting anything to do with the "Lady of Flame" who arrives as his bride. Madeline stands up to him however and totally melts his heart. A perfect romance! I loved it! :->

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and utterly wonderful, Jan 14 2004
By S. Reader "scibarfan" (Dublin, OH USA) - See all my reviews
Wow! This is one of those books that takes your breath away because of the quality of the writing, the unusual premise, the well-plotted story, and the marvelous characters.

Carroll's writing is one of the finest in any genre; it is bold, insightful, and arresting, with exactly the right blend of humor, passion, angst, hope, and danger. The author has created what may be the most unique family in all romance literature, and readers are introduced to the magical St. Legers in a way that can only be described as perfect.

The characters, the setting, indeed the entire story, will stay with you long after you have read it. It's one of those books you want to reread from time to time for the sheer pleasure of basking in such excellence.
