Whenever I open a novel by Frank Herbert, I expect to find an intricately developed world and a unique story. However, while this book delivers such a world to an extent, a story about the future of library politics still managed to take me by surprise.

Apparently intended for a younger audience, this book contains pictures on every other page, most of which are nothing but close-up's of the characters faces. Although I did not examine them closely, they were basically similar and it seemed to me that I was looking at the same illustrations over and over again. However, beyond this Herbert does not attempt to "water down" the plot too much. He still presents a wheels-within-wheels examination of the conflicting desires of characters, although the psychological development is at a lower and more blatant level than in some of his other works, with the overall effect of creating a book that is slightly simple for older readers and slightly complex for younger ones.

That said, it provides a fairly enjoyable read, though rather short due to the numerous illustrations. Stylistically, I found this novel closest to Under Pressure and the Santaroga Barrier. If you've read everything else by Herbert, give this one a try. If not, I'd suggest checking out his other works first.

Parents should also note that the book deals with adult themes including murders.
