The lovers' triangle here consists of Marika Magos, a young Czech whose parents were murdered by Nazis; Hans Kolb, a U-boat engineer who is recuperating in a South African hospital after the sinking of his submarine; and nurse Claire McGuire, who cares for Hans in more ways than one. Claire wins out over Marika in the first round; years later their three lives converge again with tragic, unexpected ramifications. PW called this "superlative."
