Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Iles's WWII thriller portrays a commando raid on a Nazi concentration camp that is developing poison gases to be used against the Allied forces.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

After Dr. Mark (Mac) McConnell dies, his grandson discovers the American pacifist had served the war effort 50 years ago: D-Day is imminent when British Prime Minister Churchill learns that the Nazis have a "Black Cross" class of deadly nerve gases. The British coerce Mac, then a defensive chemical warfare researcher at Oxford, into accompanying a battle-hardened Zionist to execute a plan to convince the Germans that the British also have the gas. Mac and his accomplice must penetrate the German concentration camp where the gases are being developed and tested, then destroy the camp with the Allies' own tiny supply of Black Cross gas. Aided by a German nurse, they pull off the improbable plot. Like Iles's previous book, Spandau Phoenix (LJ, 4/15/93), this is graphically violent and fast paced, but it is more tightly written and better focused than that first novel, which was a New York Times best seller in paperback. A tribute to World War II valor and sacrifice, this suspenseful, above average thriller is recommended for popular fiction collections.--.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best adventure novel ever...period!!, Jun 26 2004
By G. Van Der Bent "Gerb" (Katwijk, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Black Cross (Paperback)
I remember Quentin Tarantino mentioning in a tv interview that 'Where Eagles Dare' was in his opinion the ultimate men-on-a-mission movie. Well, in that case 'Black Cross' is the ultimate men-on-a-mission novel.

I won't go into the plot (see other reviews for that). I also won't go into the book that much. I just want to give my whole hearted two VERY BIG thumbs up to this novel. It had Stephen King raving and I completely agree with him.

I understand Greg Iles moved onto other thriller subgenres with later novels and that's a shame. I read a few of them and 'Black Cross' still is his best work. Without ruining anything I think I can best describe this as Alastair Maclean pushed into overdrive, but besides that Iles also doesn't glamorize the war or forgets it's horrors (the concentration camp where most of the action takes place is enough evidence of that). If it's Maclean, than cross him with 'Schindler's List' and you get the idea.

I read this book last Christmas and from page one (a flash forward to 1995 so to call) it had me hooked. All I can say is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying And Compelling, Oct 26 2007

This review is from: Black Cross (Paperback)
I was captivated from the start to finish of this book. The story sucked me in and it never let up. Greg Iles doesn't spare the reader any details in the goings-on of a nazi prison camp. For some, these details may make the book a little uncomfortable to read. However, to shy away from these details would not have done the events they are depicting justice. This is my favourite novel that takes place during World War II.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping account of terror., Feb 28 2006
By A Customer
Voice performer Jay O. Saunders gives spellbinding reading to this sometimes horrifying always compelling tale of World War II. All eyes were waiting for the Allied invasion of Europe. While elsewhere and known only to few a dramatic and life threatening scenario has begun. Winston Churchill has become aware that top Nazi scientists have produced Sarin, a ghastly new weapon, a nerve gas that could kill untold numbers. Obviously, this must be stopped and the one way to do it is chilling and dangerous. An unlikely pair, a pacifist Southern doctor and a Jewish assassin undertake this task. Their mandate is to destroy Sarin, no matter the cost, even the loss of their own lives. From opening words to final tape author and reader take listeners on a roller coaster ride of harrowing escapades and a thrilling account of terror.
I also recommend 'The Quest' by George Kostantinos.
