From Library Journal

The chaos of World War II London sends preteen Elizabeth White to the safety of Ireland and into the lives of the much larger and emotional O'Connor family. The enduring friendship she finds with her counterpart, Aisling, forms the framework of this novel, offering clear contrasts between the two families and countries. The early chapters of Binchy's 1982 debut novel are engagingly humorous, filled with solid characterizations of these two very different but compatible adolescents. The girls sustain their friendship and distinct personalities through regular letters, but unfortunately they must grow up and the novel may strain under the conventionality of the genre and some inconsistency, perhaps due to Binchy's inexperience as an author at the time she wrote the original story. Her cousin Kate Binchy reads the book well, capturing the innocence, yearning, and growth of the girls. Recommended for larger fiction collections.

From AudioFile

Shipped out of WWII-battered London by her mother, 10-year-old evacuee Elizabeth White moves in with friends, the O'Connors, in Ireland. In a book that spans three decades, author Maeve Binchy follows pale, timid Elizabeth and her red-haired, Irish-Catholic "sister," Aisling, through first loves, weddings, drunken brawls, funerals, and births. Reader Kate Binchy, the author's cousin, nimbly carries the listener from England to Ireland and back again. She casts a warm spell as she makes each character come alive, from Elizabeth's staid father, to her roguish lover, to the Polish merchant who teaches her about valuing herself. Like the title's "penny candle," Binchy's personalities glow lingeringly in the listener's mind. E.V. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This review is from: Light a Penny Candle (Paperback)
What a great way to be introduced to Maeve Binchy. One of my favourite authors and one of my favourite books. I have gone back and read this book a couple of times. For a great reading suggestion see...Glass Lake, also by Maeve Binchy.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Good Until the End, Mars 12 2003
Par Un client
This review is from: Light a Penny Candle (Paperback)
I thought this boook was another fantastic one by Maeve Binchey but I was VERY dissapointed at the ending. It did not at all fit with the rest of the book and really made me feel as if I had read 600 pages to get NOTHING! At least it wasn't a predictable ending, but it sounded as if Maeve took a break and let some other author finish the last chapter for her! Overall though, I thought the book was very intriguing. Not as good as Tara Road or Scarlet Feather though!

4.0étoiles sur 5 Story of enduring friendship, Mai 30 2002
Par Karen Potts (Lake Jackson, Texas) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
After reading several Maeve Binchy books, I came upon this one which is her first full-length novel to be published. It is the story of Elizabeth White, a shy young 10-year-old English girl, who is sent to her mother's school chum in Ireland in order to keep her from the dangers of World War II. The Irish O'Connors are the direct opposite of the English Whites. Whereas Elizabeth is an only child, her chum and counterpart Aisling shares the house with a rollicking set of brothers and sisters. Elizabeth's parents are formal and strangely aloof, while Aisling's are loud, demonstrative and loving. At the end of the war, Elizabeth returns to her cold parents, but she keeps up a correspondance with Aisling. As they grow up, the young women endure unhappy love affairs, illness in their families, and unfulfilled dreams, yet they are always free to confide in and support one another. Binchy describes life in a rollicking Irish family with loving detail and creates characters which the reader grows to love. The other side to that is the Irish melancholy which is also an important part of her writing, so the reader needs to be prepared for both.
