One Person's View, Jui 4 2008
I finished reading "Lover Enshrined" last evening and I have to say - huge disappointment. For those of you who have read the series, J. R. Ward did well to expand Rehvenge's and John Matthew's characters in this book. However Phury's story (the warrior the book was supposed to be about) was lost in all the secondary plots and storylines. The best way I would describe this book, is "scattered", and the romance plot between Phury and Cormia is lost in the mess. Turning Phury's character into a degenerate addict who wasn't even a member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood for almost the entire book was awful. The editing was poor as well, we have "Brother" speak, "Texas Lesser" speak, oh and "15th century translated bard" speak, much of which doesn't make any sense.
Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the Black Dagger Brotherhood series for the most part, especially, Dark Lover, Lover Eternal and Lover Awakened (the first 3 books). Ward wrote the heros to be larger than life with their own internal demons. Their "shellans" helped them to cope with their issues, and the strength of their bond created a good erotic romance story. The war, the fear of losing their mates as casualities and the intrigues developed within and outside the Brotherhood itself made for a great read.
One strong bit of advice; if you haven't read this series start with "Dark Lover", and read the books in order. I wouldn't advise starting with "Lover Enshrined" because it will be very difficult to follow. Better still, pick "Lover Enshrined" up at a used book store. I won't say anything more because I pre-ordered and paid full price for this book and am still licking my wounds.

It wasn't the greatest in the series, but I loved it!, Jui 12 2008
With everything happening in this one, all the twists, I could understand how somehow Phury and Cormia weren't the first and foremost in this one. Which seemed rather odd, considering the last five novels. But I think that, for Phury, what he had to get over wasn't as bad as the rest of them - what they had suffered and were taken care of by the women who fell in love with them. Phury always put everyone ahead of himself - he didn't see himself as worthy as them, therefore the drugs. Speaking from family experience, to Phury, drugs were the only thing he thought he could control in a life that was out of control ... since infancy. His parents should have been stronger than they were, and Phury had to grow up faster than he should have. The responsibilities fell on his shoulders at too young an age, and that's where his life turned into putting others before himself.
While Cormia didn't understand the whole `drug thing', she saw past the facade and fell in love with him, almost from the first. But Phury couldn't/wouldn't accept that - to him, he didn't feel worthy of it. It took Phury to hit rock bottom for it to become clear. And I'm glad where they are now - they deserve each other, more than they know.
Some people would think: "what happened to the whole `hero' thing? There wasn't any!" I believe they'd be wrong. While, for once, Phury did something for himself by choosing Cormia for himself and her alone, no one else, it took guts to stand up to the Scribe Virgin the way he did, wanting to change some of the traditions, letting the Chosen decide what they wanted to do, knowing that they still had to carry on the next generation. I think Phury's right - they'll better their odds this way. He's not just the hero to Cormia, but to all the Chosen, who now have a bit more freedom in their lives, by choosing which side they want to live on, by choosing a mate when the time comes, instead of being forced because tradition proclaims it so.
I love every twist and side-plot. This story is now blown wide open by the turns of events. If I get started on the deets right now, I'll never stop, and I don't want to blow it for those who haven't read it yet. Suffice it to say the next book will be very interesting.
Ward had me laughing, crying, snickering, and getting pissed and antsy, just like the characters. She creates a world in which you don't step out of until the end.

What happened ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!, Juil 27 2008
I'm still wondering what happened, did JR Ward even write this book!?!?!?! The read felt like she put together all the leftover scraps from her prev. books. It was such a waste of a great character like Phury. When did he & Cormia fall in love? Or how did he go from a caring, concerned brother of Zadist's & faraway admirer of Bella's to a almost schitzoid drug addict. JR needs to go back to her tried & tested true method or she's gonna lose fans. Wow I still wonder if she wrote ths book or did she finally crack from the pressure to crank out 2 books a year ?? Read enough of her books enough times to make me suspect if it was someone else's pen that wrote this book ?? Than this is a huge betrayal.
Redeem yourself JR.
