Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In the first novel in Penguin USA's new romance line, Putney ( Silk and Secrets ) offers fleshed-out characters but an overload of extraneous historical detail and a lame plot. Clare, a pious Methodist schoolteacher in a small Welsh village in 1814, agrees to live for three months with a wealthy man named Nicholas known as the "Demon Earl." Nicholas is the son of a nobleman and his gypsy wife who grew up spending some months of each year on the road with caravans and the rest of the year residing in his grandfather's sumptuous mansion. A part of the bargain is that he be allowed to kiss her once a day. Clare hopes that if she carries out her end of the deal Nicholas will see that the dangerous mine in town--in which several men have already lost their lives--is brought up to modern standards. There are also several subplots involving a friend of Nicholas's who has turned vengeful because of an imagined wrong done to him, and the rumor that Nicholas's grandfather died of a heart attack after barging in on his grandson in bed with the grandfather's second wife.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Couple, May 24 2004
By lgbdx3 (VA heartland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thunder And Roses (Paperback)
This is just a perfect story. It is full of quick-witted humor and yet has enough drama to stay out of my 'fluff' category. It is reminiscent of The Rake in some way I can't immediately put my finger on.

And, as someone else mentioned, the billiard room scene alone is worth the price. I wouldn't call it hot so much as hilarious to 'watch' them trying to outfox each other's libido. Great stuff!

Just a wonderful story. I just don't know if the other fallen angels can hold a candle to Nicholas (wow, a hero with a human heart) and Clare (ahh, a heroine who doesn't take herself too seriously) but I know you can't go wrong with this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars not Putney's best, Oct 21 2003

I know I am in the minor opinion on this book, but I didn't like it. The middle of the story really dragged for me and I kept asking myself why I was finishing the book.

This review is from: Thunder And Roses (Paperback)
Wow!! What a book!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Nicholas and Clare. They were so unbelievable together. Nicholas was UNBEARABLY sexy. I cannot wait to dive in and read the other books in this series. I have actually already read Michaels story, but Im looking forward to learning more about Lucien and Rafe. This is DEFINITELY worth reading..I recommend it ...Mary jo Putney is brilliant!
