Product Description

From Amazon.com

Written in the gloaming of their college days, just before they started National Lampoon, Douglas C. Kenney and Henry N. Beard wrote Bored of the Rings. It's dated--references to Nixon, drugs, and consumer products circa 1969 crowd every page--but darn it, Bored of the Rings is still funny nearly 30 years later: "'Goodbye, Dildo,' Frito said, stifling a sob. 'I wish you were coming with us.'

'Ah, yes. But I'm too old for that sort of thing now,' said the old boggie, feigning a state of total quadriplegia. 'Anyway, I have a few small gifts for you,' and he produced a lumpy parcel, which Frito opened somewhat unenthusiastically in view of Dildo's previous going-away present [the ring]. But the package only contained a short, Revereware sword, a bulletproof vest full of moth holes, and several well-thumbed novellas with titles like Elf Lust and Goblin Girl..."

Place yourself in the hands of these professional humorists: you won't be disappointed.

Book Description

For everyone who has delighted in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy masterwork-or anyone who's just looking for a good laugh-this is the million-copy selling comic extravaganza that will convince lovers (and haters) of fantasy that they've finally experienced it all, and that they'll never need to read another fantasy parody again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst humor book I've ever read!, May 27 2003
By teninchpeter (Sherman Oaks, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
I couldn't get past page 45 and even that was a struggle. I really wanted to like this book. There were no clever observations, no funny events, and no funny characters. Just a bunch of tired puns, anachronisms, and stupid narrative like so and so slept with an opposum.

Looking for a funny book?: For Love of Evil by Piers Anthony (I read the Incarnation Series at 15), Without Feathers by Woody Allen, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, Letters From A Nut by Sid Nancy, Big Trouble by Dave Barry, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (the first 3 chapters especially, the rest is more weird than funny), Sein Language by Jerry Seinfeld, A Clash of Kings by George RR Martin (the chapters about Theon), and Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut.

I haven't read the Robert Aspirin Books, or any of the Terry Pratchett books besides Color of Magic, but they might be good too. This book was not. It didn't even feel like a story, just a really bad stand up routine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, but not as good as "Doon", Jun 24 2000
I read "The Lord of the Rings" and loved it as a great work. I also read "Bored of the Rings" and enjoyed it as a parody of that great work. Some people seem to think that the two are mutually exclusive. You can't love LOTR and enjoy BOTR, and if you laughed at BOTR, you must not really understand Tolkien. I think that's silly -- if you know LOTR, you will appreciate the jokes more, as long as you don't take yourself too seriously.

Even great works such as "The Lord of the Rings" are not above parody. Yes, even sophomoric parodies such as this one. Yes, even parodies with jokes about (gasp) sex. (How tame its toilet jokes seem now, when compared to the stuff you can hear on the radio today.)

Sure, it would be great if there were a more subtle parody of Tolkien out there. But until that time...

"Doon" is a much better parody. Now why don't they put that one back into print?

3.0 out of 5 stars Ahem..., Aug 1 1999
By A Customer
There should be two sets of reviews for this book: Loved it, or Hated it. This isn't a review column anymore, but a bunch of people fighting over a guy who died a long time ago. I liked it, but I also liked LOTR. I am not a fanatic of either one. I do not consider either great, nor stupid or filthy. Can we leave it at that?

1.0 out of 5 stars Urgh.
For Eru's sake...why? Okay. Maybe I am obsessed with Tolkien's writing, but I wouldn't mind if there was a parody that was a little better made. Read more
