Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The seventh entry in the Guardians of the the Flame fantasy series carries on the heroic adventures in magic of 18-year-old Jason Cullinane, world-weary Walter Slovotsky and their creaturely companions. The recent war with Faerie has left the land devastated and Jason's father dead. Newcomers to the series must discover for themselves that the present action occurs on This Side and that wisecracking Walter is from the Other Side, where in another life he dug Snoopy, the Grateful Dead, Nick and Nora and other anachronisms that slip into Jason's medieval world. Also on hand is Ellogen, the flying dragon who taxis Walter around. The plot has the Slavers Guild arising and trying to enlist Jason and Walter in its toils. More interesting are Walter's personal travails, e.g., whether he will divorce his wife, pregnant by another man, and marry Aeia, whom he long ago delivered from the slavers. This helter-skelter story, whose vulgarity will be best enjoyed by teens, suggests Rosenberg may have run dry with this series.

From Booklist

In the seventh installment of Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series, the major characters are Walter Slovotsky, who has to reconcile himself to not only the loss of his wife but also to going questing with his wife's lover, and Jason Cullinane, who is slowly growing into his father boots. One part of that growth involves questing with a member of the Slavers' Guild, and that is not the yarn's only complication. The pace is brisk, and the world building and wit hold up, so this book will not disappoint those who've followed the series so far. 5.0 out of 5 stars Talk about the perfect name for a novel!, Jul 1 2000
By Twyla Naythias (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Road Home (Hardcover)
This is the one that breaks all the rules and still follows them to the letter. Most sequels grow weaker as they drift away from the original work (ie: the fourth sequel being weaker than the third, both weaker than the second, etc) but The Road Home draws on it's own wellspring in addition to the previous books, combining new and strange with old and familiar to weave a tapestry stronger than it's threads.

Walter's recurring nightmares and flashbacks seem superflorous at first, but weave together into a climax that could only be created by a master craftsman such as Rosenberg.

I'd better shut up before I give away the story, but I think most readers will associate with 'The Big Car' and, like me, find themselves re-reading the showdown and reliving their own memories every time they hear Walter smiling to his enemy with the words, "You lose."

I finally found a copy of this and The Road to Ehvenor, and now I see what the fuss was all about.

Terrific books. Best in the series, and that's a lot to say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guardian's of the Flame is one of my favorite series, Mar 29 1998
By colius@earthcorp.com (Windsor, Ontario) - See all my reviews
Rosenberg's flair for character interaction has produced one of my favorite characters: Walter Slovotsky. I have enjoyed re-reading the series many times. He HAS left some aspects of the series unfinished as of yet and I eagerly await their conclusion.

I could tell early on in this book that it was going to be a wrap-up of The Road to Ehvenor, which was excellent. Read more
