Along the way Valentine's resolve and faith in the movement are tested after learning one guerrilla leader's disturbing plans for Kurian-held Seattle. Valentine's exile from his comrades has continued three years. The war against the vampiric Kurians having continued, too, he has been fighting it on his own. His old commander and teacher Duvalier brings him back into the fold with both threats and promises involving a certain part-reaper child. His old associates want Valentine to find out what happened to the Lifeweavers, the resistance's alien allies, whose absence they think has something to do with the powerful lord of Seattle. On that mission, Valentine joins several other resistance movements, visits the half-reaper child, and sees yet more of the corruption that characterizes the Kurian-controlled world. Valentine's ultimate task, set by Southern Command, is to infiltrate the resistance movement outside of Seattle that is led by the near-legendary Mr. Adler. Unfortunately for Valentine, Mr. Adler's organization uses some pretty nasty tactics, and it's clear that the Kurians aren't the only enemy out there. I wasn't sure where this review would go...the first few chapters left me confused, somewhat hoping for more. Yet in the end I felt encouraged by the writing. I believe what left me confused is that the protagonist has changed from other novels, he's had time to come to terms with certain things and has begun to doubt the beliefs that used to drive him in previous novels.

Unlike some series that are getting into their fifth and sixth books, it is not just a nod to ongoing fans, its a book that can easily be an access point for new fans; due to the re-introduction of Valentine as a character. So many books leave you with a feeling that you have go back and read the first few of the series to really enjoy it. In this case, it felt more like you were shown that there was more to the relationships to this character than was said, but knowing would enrich the experience rather than have you scratch your head in confusion.

I love the development of Valentine in most series the lead characters become more God-like less human. As author fall in love with their characters, they protect them and leave them unscathed. But this is not true for this protagonist, he's not Superman, he's not the embodiment of truth and justice; but a man who has belief who is put through so much that you often fear for his sanity. Valentine is a wonderfully flawed character who loves, hates, fears, doubts, & has both strengths and weaknesses.

The plot is smart, fast paced, highly descriptive, and has some moments of comedy mixed into action and horror. Beyond the character aspect I have raved about, the read is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

If you like character driven action/horror/fantasy novels; then this is the book for you.
