Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Herman links the public traumas of society to those of domestic life in this provocative work of psychiatric theory.

Product Description

When Trauma and Recovery was first published in 1992, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work. In the intervening years, Herman’s volume has changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims. In a new afterword, Herman chronicles the incredible response the book has elicited and explains how the issues surrounding the topic have shifted within the clinical community and the culture at large.Trauma and Recovery brings a new level of understanding to a set of problems usually considered individually. Herman draws on her own cutting-edge research in domestic violence as well as on the vast literature of combat veterans and victims of political terror, to show the parallels between private terrors such as rape and public traumas such as terrorism. The book puts individual experience in a broader political frame, arguing that psychological trauma can be understood only in a social context. Meticulously documented and frequently using the victims’ own words as well as those from classic literary works and prison diaries, Trauma and Recovery is a powerful work that will continue to profoundly impact our thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a MUST read, Jun 1 2007
By eeching (Toronto, CA) - See all my reviews
After years of suffering .. and searching out answers .. this book was the one that brought it ALL home. It took me into some challenging areas that have brought me into a truly spiritual focus, in fact. I think the material on second-hand PTSD is truly a revelation and absolutely needed to be added to the therapeutic literature before it was too late.

I have given away at LEAST 30 copies of this book, and not because the people were too lazy to buy it; it just was very difficult to find it on Canadian bookstore shelves.

It's probably a bit "academic" for some sufferers of PTSD, and their families, but it sure covers the ground.

As the cover says, its a MUST read not JUST for professionals in the mental heaalth field, but for community organizers, lawyers and all kinds of so-called professionals.

I sold self help and therapeutic books for a long time, reviewed them and "catalogued" them. I would put this book in my Top 10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight, April 8 2004
What insight! I also highly recommend reading Peaceful Heart: A Woman's Journey of Healing, by Aimee Jo Martin....a book that is a true testament to the human spirit and takes the reader thru a client's perspective of getting thru PTSD.

What a wonderfully honest book! It shares the heartbreak of what rape does to the human soul. I also highly recommend reading Peaceful Heart: A Woman's Journey of Healing, by Aimee Jo Martin....a book that is a true testament to the human spirit.
