From Amazon.com

Linnea Bradenborg expects to find culture and excitement in Alamo, North Dakota, where she's recently been hired as the new schoolteacher. Instead, she finds a sparse little town in the middle of nowhere. Better yet, her train is met by a cantankerous wheat farmer named Theodore Westgaard who doesn't bother to hide his displeasure when he discovers that L.I. Brandenborg is a woman and not the man he was expecting. Westgaard thinks twice about bringing Linnea home to live with him, but he soon realizes that he has no choice. All of the town's past schoolteachers have lived with the Westgaard family--made up of Theodore, his mother, and his teenaged son--due to their farm being located very near the schoolhouse, and so Theodore allows Linnea into his home. But who could have guessed that this young, independent woman would soon find her way into the handsome farmer's heart? A compelling classic to be read again and again, Years is a fitting tribute to the pioneer schoolteachers who braved many hardships to share the gift of knowledge with countless children. --Maudeen Wachsmith

From Publishers Weekly

In September 1917, 18-year-old Linnea Brandonberg steps off the train in Alamo, North Dakota, eager to begin her first teaching job. A town girl, she is not prepared for the dour reception of the Westgaard family, with whom she is boarding. But rather than let people and circumstances master her, she singlehandedly changes them, including Theodore Westgaard, a bitter widower of 35 who never thought he would fall in love again. Spencer has done a splendid job here in making this more than a story of two people enamored of each other. She describes the growth of Teddy and Linnea's love with sensitivity and refreshing candor and brings all the residents of Alamo to life in a way that makes the reader care about their satisfactions and heartaches.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Unforgettable, Oct. 12 2007
Par Joan (Toronto, ON) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Ce commentaire est de: Years (Paperback)
I noticed that some authors load their stories with characters that live glamorous lives and plots that are as complicated as soap operas to make the novel more interesting. Ms. Spencer has done an amazing job of weaving a story that is so enthralling in its utter simplicity. The characters are ordinary people who live ordinary lives, and it is through Ms. Spencer's skillful storytelling that the situations they face everyday and the internal conflicts that they struggle with are made extraordinary. It shows us that a book doesn't have to have "un-ordinary" people for extraordinary things to happen.

The title is appropriate not just (superficially) because of the sixteen-year age difference between the two main characters, Linnea Brandonberg and Theodore Westgaard, but also because the novel is about continuity of life, which was depicted by different generations of the Westgaard family. It's about the joy and innocence of childhood, the uncertainty and impulsiveness of adolescence, the dogged obstinacy of adulthood, and the philosophical self-possession of the golden years.

"YEARS" is: impossibly beautiful, down-to-earth, effortlessly captivating, graceful, seamless, tender, sweet, real... there are no words that could completely describe just exactly how wonderful this novel is.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A classic!, Mai 4 2004
One of the first Spencer books I ever read and I continue to re-read the book every year. Spencer is phenomenal creating truthful, honest characterst the reader can relate to; Linnea and Teddy are realistic and flawed, yet endearing. The story between the two of them is brilliant and, again, realistic; the conflicts in their romance are as appropriate in today's modern world as they were on the prairie at the turn of the century. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to read a classic romance novel!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Unforgettable book, Avril 6 2004
I read this book in 1995. I have never forgotten the loving and touching story. Few stories have touched me like this one did. In fact, should I ever be blessed with another daughter, I'll probably name her Linnea.
