1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry folks..., Sep 26 2001
By Kathy Cole (Arlington, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This was the first of his books that I have read and what a disappointment. Having read another one (thought I'd give him another chance), this is how I see it. Jessica is one of those plucky Nancy Drew-types (tough, gung-ho, too trusting/not trusting enough, self-deprecating, always at odds with one of her bosses) who HAS to do battle with the WORST, MOST heinous villain EVER (Mad Matthew Matisak, puh-leeese!). It's just all too "breathtaking" for me.
She starts out wanting to get out the FBI's "protective" custody (Mad Matthew has vowed to drink her blood!) so she steamrolls her boss into letting her go to New Orleans to work on finding the Queen of Hearts killer (the author eventually has about 4 or 5 names for the killer). At the same time, she'll be drawing out MMM. There are enough red herrings in the plot to populate a fish market, and every one is sooo obvious. There are incredible coincidences and leaps and one or two really confusing aspects to the plot. Not too mention an FBI psychic who tags along...and you will thank me for not mentioning that part of the story.
Finally, the love relationship aspect of the story is introduced and then given short shrift (thank God because he has no clue how to write from a woman's perspective or a man's!). I finished this book only because I'd invested [an amount of money] and a couple of night's reading. I've struck Mr. Walker off my reading list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walker's Jessica Coran keeps the pages turning!, May 8 1999
By "missterious" (Omaha, NE USA) - See all my reviews
I don't know what book the last reviewer read, but it definitely could not have been Walker's Pure Instinct. Obviously, he/she had never read any of Walker's previous Coran thrillers. Jessica Coran has been face to face and a victim of a slasher and a blood-letting, blood-saving vampire. How that is "ordinary" is beyond my comprehension, but maybe I haven't been living in the same world as some of the rest of us.
