From Publishers Weekly

A dedication to H. P. Lovecraft opens Strieber's ( Unholy Fire ) latest tale, paving the way for fantastical and grisly visions. In fact, Strieber borrows liberally from his malignant muse, adapting that author's concept of a monstrous alternate dimension and even giving Lovecraft's ubiquitous whippoorwills a cameo appearance. Not long after physicist Brian Kelly and his pregnant wife hear human screams coming from within a dirt mound, inhabitants of their upstate New York town are attacked by wasp-like fireflies, women transformed into grub-like creatures are dug from the earth and an otherworldly being terrorizes motorists from its Dodge Viper. Brian theorizes that somehow the space-time fabric has been breached, and before long he and a few companions are engaged in a classic battle with an army of ancient demons. Strieber's updates and additions to Lovecraft's original ideas--for instance, the sexual component of gruesome death scenes--provide ample suspense and gore, even if the final battle has few fresh twists. Horror enthusiasts will find his central concept chilling, a primal force beyond human comprehension or control. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club selections.

From Library Journal

A small town in the Adirondacks becomes a beachhead for an invasion of large, insect-like creatures that first seduce and then sadistically absorb the native population. Brian and Loi Kelly become aware of the unearthly invasion and take the lead in fighting the creatures and warning their neighbors. Brian feels responsible for the death and destruction because his physics research laid the groundwork for the onslaught. This audiobook is a work of graphic and sensationalized (however imaginative) violence bereft of any logical or believable context. Reader Buck Schirner's tendency to overdramatize, especially during the most violent passages, exacerbates the ludicrous text. This is not Strieber's best work. Not recommended.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Unbelievably bad, Mars 21 2004

This review is from: Forbidden Zone (Library Binding)
Whitley Strieber has written some very intelligent, scary, thought-provoking stuff -- and this ain't it. It tries to be, by turns, sexy, scary, and really really gross, and fails miserably on all counts (well, it does manage to be pretty gross). There are no believable characters, the horror is too over-the-top and cartoonish to be scary, and the plot is beyond stupid.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Silly monster novel entertains, Jui 2 2000

This review is from: Forbidden Zone (Paperback)
This book has more in common with John Carpenter's version of The Thing than it does with H.P. Lovecraft's classic mythos stories. Some strange creature zaps people with a hypnotic light and takes over their bodies, turning them into shape shifting things. The handful of survivors try to escape a world that is being rapidly invaded and changed. Action packed and fun on its own terms, nonetheless the novel suffers from a certain lack of depth.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Give this one a miss, Nov. 19 1999
Par Un client
This review is from: Forbidden Zone (Paperback)
It's not often that I run across a book so terrible that I can't finish it, but this was certainly one of them! The plot was given away almost from the beginning, and the characters were strictly two-dimensional. I found the dialouge irritating and the actions of the main characters unbelievable. I haven't read any other books by this author, and now I probably won't.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Incredible!
I can't believe the low ratings this book is getting. This is one of Strieber's best books, and it is definetly one of the best horror stories out there. Read more

1.0étoiles sur 5 A weak novel
It could have been a great book. The plot is there. A fitting setting is there, too. But the the author forgot to form credible characters. Read more

1.0étoiles sur 5 Horrible
One of the worst books I've ever (tried to) read. Had to skip to the end, and even then it wasn't worth the time commitment.

With this book Strieber shows his background in film by writing something that can best be described as a novelization of a bad 50's monster movie, with the characteristic lack of... Read more
