Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Departing from her usual literary territory of Nodd's Ridge, King (The Book of Reuben) moves onto a Maine campus to pit a strong yet vulnerable woman against her own demons as she struggles to extricate herself from a poisonous marriage. Talented photographer Kristin "Kissy" Mellors, 21, is poised to escape her hometown of Peltry, where she is finishing college, when a tragic accident freezes her in her tracks. Spotting two college girls in her headlights one night, Kissy slams on the breaks only to watch helplessly as the car behind her plows on and mows down the girls, killing one and leaving the other severely brain damaged. Traumatized, Kissy is compelled to photograph the comatose girl over and over. She finds herself inextricably bound to three men as well: Junior Clootie, a local hockey star who was the lover of the girl who died; James Houston, a wealthy premed student who was the drunk driver responsible for the accident; and Mike Burke, the first officer on the scene. Pregnant, Kissy marries Clootie (although Houston could be the father); but when his boozing and womanizing escalate into abusive behavior, she bails out, falling into a marriage with Burke. Rising from cop to assistant DA, the alcoholic Burke never loses his infatuation for Kissy, but theirs is a brutal, lifeless marriage. In a tough and gritty conclusion involving a breathtaking chase, Kissy starts making the right decisions after years of wrong choices, confronting Burke and regaining her own soul. King has created a compelling heroine in Kissy. Faltering yet determined to be brave, she captivates the reader just as a speeding car captivates the driver who desperately wants to get it under control.

From Library Journal

In this compelling psychological drama, we are drawn into the world of Kissy Mellors. She is the driver who stopped in time to avoid killing two young women?but the drunk who passed her did not. One woman dies, and the other goes into a coma that lasts for years. Kissy's life is changed forever by this event and by the relationships she forms because of it?with the comatose victim and her family, with the dead girl's boyfriend (a hockey player Kissy later marries), with the investigating officer, even with the drunk driver. Kissy is free-spirited, foul-mouthed, and talented and understands little of her own motivations. King gives us a much greater understanding of the minds and emotions of the men who love Kissy; we almost sympathize with the man who obsesses about her to the point of violence. This is as good as anything King has done previously and belongs in most fiction collections.

3.0 out of 5 stars Captivating from the beginning., Jul 3 2003
By A. Marbach "badgroove" (Sometimes Sunny California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Survivor (Paperback)
This book is very captivating from the beginning. It is the story of Kissy Mallor, a young woman who while driving on campus in her Maine college town finds herself daydreaming, and nearing hitting two co-eds crossing the street, only to then witness the horror of the driver behind her then striking the two girls killing one and putting the other into a lingering coma. She feels an inexplicable need (perhaps driven by guilt) to photograph the comatose girl and ends up falling into tumuluous relationships with three men involved in the accident: The boyfriend of the comatose girl, the premed who struck the girls and one of the officers at the scene of the crime...all of whom she has sex with at some point or another. Suddenly finding herself pregnant she marries Cootie, the boyfriend. Then finds herself in a loveless, violent marriage. It is at this point that the book falls apart slightly, as Kissy jumps from a marriage with Cootie to a marriage with Mike, the officer...even though the father of her child is probably the premed student. It get's ridiculous at this point yet remains captivating as you are interested in how it works out in the end (which I won't give away). This book starts out stong but weekends towards the middle and end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but.., Jun 11 2003
This review is from: Survivor (Paperback)
This is the first Tabitha King book I've read and it was very well written. The book kept me glued at first until I found Kissy's leaving Junior over and over to be getting old. I found the same to apply to Junior's drinking whenever Kissy left him. When they were single I applauded her for dumping him. Yet during their married life she left impulsively, whenever some little trouble arose. Not to mention there were so many characters I couldn't keep them all straight. Whew. It's a good read, but exhausting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hey! How about an ending?, May 29 2003
By Pherenike (Ca. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Survivor (Paperback)
Not a bad book, an interesting peek into lives that are very unlike mine. My major, MAJOR gripe is the abrupt ending. It tied up one story line, but left a half dozen others just hanging. What about Junior? Who's pregnant and by whom and what will happen? Though not completely neccessary, I'd like to know if Kissy is blamed for what happens in the end or not. I really feel as though another chapter or two would have been nice. Reveal whether Kissy is a strong woman under the mess, how the marriage might fare, careers, etc.
