From Publishers Weekly

In this apologia for Christian faith, Keller mines material from literary classics, philosophy, anthropology and a multitude of other disciplines to make an intellectually compelling case for God. Written for skeptics and the believers who love them, the book draws on the author's encounters as founding pastor of New York's booming Redeemer Presbyterian Church. One of Keller's most provocative arguments is that all doubts, however skeptical and cynical they may seem, are really a set of alternate beliefs. Drawing on sources as diverse as 19th-century author Robert Louis Stevenson and contemporary New Testament theologian N.T. Wright, Keller attempts to deconstruct everyone he finds in his way, from the evolutionary psychologist Richard Dawkins to popular author Dan Brown. The first, shorter part of the book looks at popular arguments against God's existence, while the second builds on general arguments for God to culminate in a sharp focus on the redemptive work of God in Christ. Keller's condensed summaries of arguments for and against theism make the scope of the book overwhelming at times. Nonetheless, it should serve both as testimony to the author's encyclopedic learning and as a compelling overview of the current debate on faith for those who doubt and for those who want to re-evaluate what they believe, and why. From AudioFile

This book of Christian apology is a 21st-century version of C.S. Lewis's book MERE CHRISTIANITY. It takes the major arguments against the existence of God and explodes them one at a time. Then Keller argues against various critiques of Christianity. As the pastor of a growing church in Manhattan, Keller utilizes his skill in delivering sermons to strong effect. He doesn't yell or thump his Bible. Rather, he makes his strongest points quietly. The book is extremely deep, though, and listeners are urged to take it slowly as it's harder to "re-read" complex passages. Also, Keller occasionally gets caught up in presenting philosophical arguments and has a slight tendency to speed up as he lists his points. 5.0étoiles sur 5 Best rational explanation of Christianity, Aoû 11 2008
Par Jeremy Mcclung (Huntsville, ON, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
As a young pastor, I often find Christian resources to be out of date and out of touch. Keller's intelligent, honest, thorough and well-written explanation of Christianity is THE BEST book I have ever read about why Christianity makes sense. A quick glance through the table of contents reveals that Keller is in touch with the questions that our generation is asking. Of course, there is no proof offered here, only evidence, logic and (compelling, I think) arguments. If you're a seeker or skeptic who would like to find a book that will explain why intelligent people can still believe in Jesus, this will be a great read for you. Or if you're like me, a Christian struggling for words to make your beliefs make sense in today's culture, then this will help immensely.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Reason to Read this Book, Mai 11 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This book is engaging. In "The Reason for God", Tim Keller has written an intellectually stimulating and yet widely accessible defense of the Christian faith. Also, this book is refreshing for a number of reasons. First, Keller has gone out of his way to avoid most intramural debates and controversies (which may be taken as a weakness by some) that arise across denominational lines, choosing instead to put forward a reasoned defense of the universal, Trinitarian, Biblically centered Christian faith. In so doing, he draws on the best sources from a fairly wide range of Christian writers past and present, yet does so without sacrificing his Reformed Protestant convictions.

Secondly, Keller's intended audience being both genuine seekers after truth and believers who would like to grow in their own understanding, he avoids getting remotely close to the extremes of militant arrogance or squishy try-it-you'll-like-it approaches to advocating for the faith. Instead, he offers an honest, clear-headed, fair, well read and thoughtful conversation for those who are willing to think again about the assumptions they have been making (wrongly) about the Christian faith and therefore writing it off. Just as willing to answer the hard questions posed to Christians as he is to ask the hard questions of those who doubt and deny the faith, Keller has not assumed the rabid-pit-bull-with-a-megaphone tone of so many of today's new atheists in their attacks on Christianity. He is honest with those questioning the faith and he expects the same honestly as he questions right back.

Thirdly, and of most interest to Christian apologists, Keller has combined the best aspects of several approaches to apologetics, wrapping them all up within the presuppositional approach which does a masterful job of pointing out the inherent faith assumptions of all people, including, and maybe especially, the most systematically rationalistic and scientific deniers of all things religious.

Lastly, Keller has managed to communicate not only the truth of God but the love of God as well. He does this not only through what he says but through the winsome spirit in which it is said. Gracious tough-mindedness. That is because these aren't theoretical arguments Keller makes but real answers he has given to hurting or searching people in the young, growing and widely diverse New York congregation he pastors. Christianity is the truth and Keller rightly believes therefore that it gives real answers to honest questions. No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, this book will repay an honest read.
